At Insomnia, Caitlin continues to talk optimistically about Ridge's family's future. Ridge questions why she is so convinced but Caitlin will only say that things will change. Massimo calls Ridge and tells him about Brooke's fall. Massimo tries to convince Ridge that he shouldn't come to the hospital, but Ridge won't hear it. He and the kids take off for the hospital.

Jackie and Massimo leave Brooke and Nick alone. Brooke apologizes for the things she said earlier. Nick feels terrible that she is in the hospital because of him and all the animosity he's created. But he's determined to make sure it's all over by the time the baby arrives. He tries to push her into being optimistic about what has happened with more sailing metaphors, but Brooke's not convinced.

Jackie goes to the chapel and thanks God for the baby's health. She then pleads with God to make the baby Nick's and asks what she should do. Nick comes in and they talk about how happy they both are that Brooke and the baby are fine. Jackie still does not let on that the baby may not be Nick's. She says she's going to see Brooke again before she leaves and starts to go. She stops in the doorway and watches as Nick thanks God for everything that he's been given in the last year - a father - a son.

Ridge, Thomas, Phoebe, and Steffy visit Brooke in her room. Brooke assures them that she's fine. The kids leave for a while and Ridge and Brooke are alone. Ridge says he couldn't get there fast enough when he heard that she was hurt, but it feels wrong to be told be Massimo and not to be the one to comfort her. The kids come back with balloons and flowers. Steffy offers to take the flowers home and put them in Brooke's room, but Ridge tells her that Brooke won't be coming home with them. Brooke tries to explain to them that she loves them all very much, but sometimes you have to do things for other people's happiness.

Jackie sees Caitlin outside of Brooke's room and questions what she is doing there. Caitlin explains that she was with Thomas' family when they got the call about Brooke. Jackie asks nervously if Caitlin has mentioned anything to Ridge about the baby. Caitlin says that she hasn't, although she would really like to. After all Thomas' family has been through, they would be so thrilled to find out that the baby could be their little brother.

Ridge tells the kids that things sometimes happen that everyone must accept. Steffy remarks that it's just like with their mom. An intern comes in thinking that this was Brooke's family and turns the monitor on so they can have one last look at the baby. Thomas comments that that is Nick's baby and the room becomes very tense. Brooke asks the children not to blame their uncle Nick for what has happen. Phoebe wishes that the baby were their little brother so that they could all be together. Tears spring to Brooke's eyes while she tells them that she will always love them and will always be a part of their lives. The girls hug Brooke, Thomas and Ridge look dejected, and Jackie watches the scene from the window.

While visiting Brooke at the hospital, Ridge, Phoebe, Steffy and Thomas were shown Brooke's ultra sound by the doctor. The doctor had assumed that this was Brooke's family.

Meanwhile, outside of Brooke's room, Caitlin was trying to convince Jackie to tell Brooke that the results of the paternity test may be incorrect. Jackie refused to agree to Caitlin's request.

Outside of Brooke's room, Nick and Ridge confronted one another once again. Nick advised Ridge that he must accept that he is not the father of Brooke's baby. Ridge boasted that Brooke's heart would always be his. Nick asked that he and Ridge no longer argue for the baby's sake. Ridge nixed Nick's suggestion.

Brooke told Stephanie who was visiting that she slipped on Nick's boat after hearing Nick and Ridge argue. Brooke admitted that after she fell, it was as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulder. Brooke's only concern was for her baby. She was no longer concerned about her separation from Ridge. Brooke disclosed to Stephanie that she did not envision herself parenting her child alone. Stephanie reminded her that she has much support. Stephanie offered her support and assistance. Brooke accepted Stephanie's offer of support.

At Dr. Paxton's funeral, Jackie struggled with the decision of whether or not to inform Nick and Brooke that the results of the paternity test may be incorrect.

Nick brings Brooke home from the hospital. Hope comes running to Brooke. Nick picks Hope up and flies her around the room while Brooke watches. He shows Hope the ultrasound picture of her brother. Nick tells Hope what a great mom she and her little brother have. Later, Brooke gets ready for bed. When Nick comes into her room, she thanks him for taking care of her and Hope. He asks her if she has thought about his proposal that they love their son together. After showing her how much he thinks the face in the ultrasound picture looks like him, he leaves. After Brooke falls asleep, Nick quietly enters. He watches her sleep and tucks in her blankets. After lovingly stroking her hair, he leaves the ultrasound picture on her nightstand.

At Dr. Paxton's funeral, Jackie decides no one will ever know what Dr. Paxton was coming to tell Brooke the day of the accident.

Samantha comes by to see Ridge at his office. She wonders how Brooke and the baby are doing. Ridge admits he is upset. He tells her that Nick wants to call a truce for the sake of Brooke and the baby. Ridge hates how possessive Nick has become of Brooke. Ridge feels that Nick has robbed him of his family, and that Nick is using the baby to get closer to Brooke. He admits to Samantha that when he saw the ultrasound picture of the baby, he felt that the child was his.

Caitlin enters Eric's office and is happy to see Eric using Stephanie's face in his designs. Eric wishes that Ridge could be as happy as he is. Caitlin is sure that Ridge will get some good news soon. She is about to tell Eric about the questionable paternity results when Jackie enters, looking for Caitlin. When Eric is called out of the office, Caitlin asks Jackie why she hasn't told anyone about the paternity test yet. Jackie lies and tells Caitlin that she found out at Dr. Paxton's funeral that the results were accurate. Jackie convinces Caitlin that she doesn't need to mention this to anyone.

Ridge arrives at the Marone house at Massimo's request. Massimo expresses his concern for Ridge's situation but reiterates that he believes that Brooke has made the right decision and he respects her for it. Ridge notes sourly that everyone seems to have a newly found respect for Brooke now that she and Ridge are not together. Massimo is convinced that the entire Marone family would be thrown into chaos if Brooke were to have handled things differently. Ridge doesn't feel that his kids should have to suffer because one night, at the lowest point in Brooke's life, Nick exploited her. Jackie, who is listening and the top of the stairs, half-heartedly tells Ridge that she is sympathetic to his pain but that he must accept that Nick and Brooke are having a child together. Ridge takes her entrance as his cue to leave, but Nick comes running in the back door raving about his beautiful new baby boy and flashing the ultrasound picture around. Ridge exchanges unpleasant words with both Nick and Jackie until Massimo jumps in to try to force a truce. Massimo forces Ridge and Nick to shake hands but Ridge grabs Nick by the collar and shakes him, saying that he will never accept this, and storms out into the Santa Ana winds.

Caitlin is at home when her father comes in and finds Thomas' prep school jacket. He insists that she and a prep school boy could have nothing in common and that she would only be setting herself up for a fall if she continued to see him. Caitlin tries to defend Thomas, telling her father that Thomas lost his mother the same as she did and that they are only friends anyway. Her father, being a firefighter, is on call all night due to the winds and dry heat. He goes into the back room to get his things before leaving and Thomas knocks on the door. She opens the door, but hears her father coming before she has a chance to say anything, and quickly slams the door in Thomas' face. Once her dad leaves out the back, she opens the door to a stunned Thomas, who is upset from the events of the day. He says that he came to get his jacket, but he also wanted to talk. She apologizes and invites him in. Thomas explains that seeing the look on his father's face for that moment when he saw the baby on the screen, knowing that for a second Ridge felt that baby was his, until reality hit, was very difficult for the whole family. If only the baby was his dad's, they could all be a family again.

Rick visits Brooke and tries to encourage her to give Nick a chance, since things never seem to work out for her and Ridge. But Brooke only wants to be with Ridge, not Nick. Still, she is determined to do the right thing. Once Rick leaves, Brooke goes back to sleep only to be awoken by the winds. She asks aloud why this is happening to her and Ridge. The terrace doors in her bedroom rattle and blow open. A shining, glowing, ghost of Taylor comes through the doors and says that she can tell Brooke why.

Thomas mentions that his mother is gone and Caitlin says she thinks that both of their mothers' spirits are looking out for them. Then Caitlin gets defensive about Thomas' family's money. Thomas guesses that she's repeating her father. She admits that her father reminded her that she and Thomas come from different worlds. Both of their fathers had to bring up their families alone, but that's where the similarities end. Thomas thinks it's only the beginning. They both lost their mothers and that's something that is hard to relate to for most people. Caitlin feels as though she never had a mother to lose. She tells Thomas that her father was always taking people in who had lost their homes to fires. Those people helped to care of her as a child. Thomas is impressed with Caitlin's dad and tells her he's never met anyone like her before. He thanks her for listening and kisses her cheek before he leaves.

Brooke is shocked to see a vision of Taylor in her room. Taylor seems to be there in body as well as spirit, and the two women embrace. Brooke explains that she has tried to be a better person and that she wanted to emulate Taylor. Taylor thanks Brooke for the compliments but tells her that it's easy to idealize people when they're gone. Taylor tells Brooke that she has great heart and that she has been a good influence on Ridge and the kids. She assures Brooke that she will find a way through if she listens to her instincts. Brooke says that her instincts are telling her to be with Ridge. When Brooke asks Taylor for insight into whether she and Ridge would ever be together again, Taylor insists that these are Brooke's answers to find, but that it will work out for her.

Phoebe tries to get Ridge to open up about the difficult day Ridge has had. Ridge tells her that she reminds him very much of Taylor. He feels terrible that he doesn't always know what to say the way that Taylor used to. He's sorry that she didn't get to have more time with her mother. Thomas comes home and finds Phoebe and Ridge talking about Taylor. He tells them that he has been thinking about his mother tonight also. Later, Ridge is woken from his sleep to find Taylor's spirit in his room.
