EMMY ROUNDUP

While Days of our Lives is repeatedly ranked near the top of the Nielsen ratings chart, the show has not always done so well at the Emmy Awards.

Amazingly, Days of our Lives has only once been named Outstanding Drama Series one time in its history. That win came back in 1978.

Moving over to the Lead Actor category, DAYS' last wins came in 1974 and 1975 when the legendary Macdonald Carey (Tom) took the trophies. Since then, the show has not repeated the feat.

DAYS has more than its share of well-known female stars, so surely the show has done much better in the Lead Actress category. Not so. The only win by the show in the Lead Actress field came in 1975 when Susan Flannery (ex-Laura) was awarded an Emmy. Flannery was a repeat winner last year in this category for her work as The Bold and the Beautiful's Stephanie Forrester.

In the Writing and Directing categories, DAYS has also experienced some difficulties. In 1978, the show won the top writing honors. Since that time, the numerous nominations have never resulted in wins.

Billy Warlock (ex-Frankie) was named Outstanding Younger Man (now Outstanding Younger Actor) in 1988. Warlock has since moved to General Hospital where he plays AJ Quartermaine. There have been no wins by DAYS performers in the Younger Actress category.

Moving to the Supporting Actress category gives DAYS' its most wins. In 1986, Leann Hunley (ex-Ana) picked up the trophy. Also, in 1979 Suzanne Rogers (Maggie) earned a victory.

In the past two Emmy ceremonies broadcast by NBC, the network has not ended up in the winners' circle. While the ceremony is to honor excellence in daytime television, it must trouble daytime executives that they're promoting other networks' wins.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Behind the scenes, Days of our Lives was just as absent from the chatterbox as it was from the Emmy nominations.

Joseph Mascolo will be leaving Days of our Lives when his contract expires. For more details, be sure to read the DAYS Online News section.

soapcentral.com chatted briefly with Alison Sweeney (Sami) as she made her way along the red carpet. The actress was extremely cordial and waved to fans who frantically called out her character's name.

Also spotted along the red carpet were Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Peter Reckell (Bo) as well as Deidre Hall (Marlena).
