Ron Carlivati reveals his DAYS storylines are vet heavy

Days of our Lives' new head writer, Ron Carlivati, says his upcoming storylines focus heavily on veteran actors because the NBC soap has "an embarrassment of riches."

This week is an exciting one for Days of our Lives fans because the new material written by the soap opera's latest head writer, former General Hospital and One Life to Live scribe Ron Carlivati, is scheduled to start airing on Wednesday, July 19. And the Emmy-winning writer says longtime fans of the show are sure to be pleased.

"There will be focus on the vets, because I love writing for the vets," he told Soap Opera Digest in a six-page spread. "Having grown up watching soaps, I often gravitated to the characters that had been on for a long time, so what's great about DAYS is, there's a deep bench of characters like that with Steve and Kayla and Hope and John and Marlena and the DiMeras and Stefano, who sadly has passed away, but you still have Andre and his family, and you have Victor Kiriakis. Lucas is getting a big story and I am looking forward to it. You have an embarrassment of riches."

Carlivati's take on how to write DAYS is a successful formula he's used before. He said similar statements about his writing style back in 2007, when he took over head writing duties at OLTL.

"What I love about soaps is classic soap opera storytelling," he said at the time. "I've watched soaps for a long time, so I think you have to respond to the history of the show, and the audience wants to see that. And because I'm a fan, I'd like to think that I think like a fan and [write] what the fans will want to see."

Even though his material hasn't aired yet, Carlivati has already pleased a lot of longtime viewers of the show; he immediately went to work penning storylines that have led to the return of fan favorite actors Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady), Eileen Davidson (in an unannounced role), and Chandler Massey (Will Horton). To catch the debut of Carlivati's material, be sure to tune in to DAYS this week.
