With a new writing regime in place at General Hospital, shakeups to the cast were inevitable. Now, in the first batch of changes, two newcomers are out and one veteran actress is making a much anticipated return.
According to setside sources, Sarah Laine (Sarah Webber) will exit the show this summer. The actress joined the cast back in January.
Also on the departure front, word has it that Jaime Ray Newman (Kristina Cassadine) will depart. Newman and her character were very well received by fans, so it remains unclear why the decision came down to scrap the part. Newman joined General Hospital in August 2001.
In August, Vanessa Marcil (Brenda Barrett) will make her long-anticipated return to General Hospital. After months - maybe even years - of rumors, the actress' publicist has now confirmed that she will return to the show. Marcil joined General Hospital in 1992, but left the show in 1998. Ever since that time, anxious fans have been chattering about her possible return.
In November 2001, Marcil denied that her return to General Hospital was imminent.
"I have never once had any conversations with anybody [...] about coming back," said Marcil in an interview.
Marcil's return is only slated to last a few months, however, it is entirely possible that her stay could be extended.
