Brief Character History

Gutsy little orphan Audra "Dorie" Smith was first introduced to India von Halkein Spaulding when India was punished for her part in an embezzling scheme against Spaulding Foundation monies, and was sentenced to 30 days community service at the Stony Lake Reformatory, where she befriended Dorie. This unlikely relationship brought out a refreshing new side to the usual self-centered India. Dorie herself appreciated India, seeing how she had been shuttled from pillar to post as an orphan and helped India through her 30 days and helped sort of domesticate the usual party girl, India. But India had not completely reformed. She was hiding the identity of a third party who was in cahoots with her and her father, the Baron Leo von Halkein, a man who many in Springfield, at the time, assumed had died two years earlier. He would soon reveal himself at a masquerade ball, in front of everyone who was anyone in Springfield. It was Alan Spaulding!

Now the proud owner of mineral rights in the war-torn country of San Rios, Alan intended to rebuild his power base in Springfield. He outbid Billy Lewis and Kyle Sampson for the Mirror, a sensationalistic competitor of the Springfield Journal, and plotted to take over Sampson-Lewis. He schemed with India to boot Alex out of Spaulding Enterprises, and he muscled his way onto Cedars' board of directors and tried to oust Ed and Maureen Bauer, claiming that both were inefficient.

In July 1986, India out of the reformatory became embroiled in a madcap, though ultimately tragic, adventure. Beth Raines began working at the local museum, Art Gallery Cache, for a Professor Blackburn, who got his hands on the cornerstone of the Von Halkein estate in Andora. India knew the cornerstone contained gold, and she tried to steal it from the professor. Blackburn knew he was sitting on a treasure and defended it literally to the death. He knocked India unconscious, shot Phillip Spaulding and held Beth hostage aboard a boat on Stony Lake. Sometime later, Blackburn's dead body turned up. Beth's shoe and some fabric from her dress were found, but she was nowhere in sight. Phillip was devastated and vowed to find her. But Alan, who had always looked down on Beth, fabricated evidence to make it appear that she had indeed died.

At this time, Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis was working as Alan's photographer at the Mirror so she could keep tabs on him for Kyle. One of her first assignments was to shoot underwater photos of Stony Lake, which had become flooded. There she found Professor Blackburn's boat, which contained evidence inconsistent with Alan's claims that Beth was dead. Reva confronted Alan with her findings but agreed not to reveal them when he backed off on an article he was planning to write -- a slam piece on Kyle's parentage. But Reva was soon to make an even more dramatic discovery in the flooded waters: the Von Halkein gold! To Alan's horror, Kyle nobly gave the treasure to its rightful owner, the ambassador of Andora. Alan and India then hoodwinked the dignitary into giving it back to India, and the two subsequently became lovers as well as cohorts.

India was not entirely comfortable with the relationship, though. India had now adopted Dorie as her child and Dorie was uncomfortable with India's relationship with. Before India started her relationship with Alan, India had briefly started a dating relationship with Cedars hospital neurologist, Dr. Mark Jarrett, and Dorie had campaigned to get India together with him, but to no avail. Dr. Jarrett was in love with his patient, Dr. Claire Ramsey. India had also became involved with Professor Blackburn, when the owner of the Art Gallery Cache, Carlo Fontini had hired her to run the Cache. What India not know though, was that the Art Gallery Cache, in fact, was a front fot stolen masterpieces. Carlo was unknowningly involved with Alan, who was peddling the collection! While Alan was still in exile at the von Halkein castle in Andora, India's father, the Baron Leo von Halkein had been introduced and then gotten involved with a pair of art smugglers named Paul and Christine Valere. Now that the Valeres were seperated, Christine truned to a former lover for help in the operation. He was Johnny Bauer, Cedars chief-of-staff, Dr. Ed Bauer's distant cousin. Johnny was a handsome pilot who was now based at the Springfield Airport. John Cutler a Springfield businessman, also involved with the art smuggling scheme, had hired Johnny as a courier. Christine hoped Johnny would act as a courier for the hot goods, but Johnny had integrity and was hestitant. Then India's old flame, Warren Andrews, caught on to the scheme. India and Warren set out to turn the tables on Alan and another of his cohorts, a handsome Frenchman named Jean-Claude Laval. By coincidence, Jean-Claude was engaged to one of Ed's wife, Maureen's younger sisters, vivacious singer Chelsea Reardon.

At this time another secret involving people totally uninvolved in the art smuggling scheme was about to surface. This involved by coincidence one of Dorie's slightly older friends, Dinah. Dinah and Dorie had known each other when they both were living in the same foster home (the one head by Calvin "Cat" Brixton) at one time and were still good friends and virtually sisters. Businesswoman and Spaulding Enterprises executive, Vanessa Chamberlain Lewis had never told attorney Ross Marler that she had given birth to a duaghter by hem when she was seventeen years old. She had put the girl up for adoption with the help of her maternal aunt Grace Cummings who lived in Maine. Feeling unfulfilled in her marriage to her boisterous Billy Lewis, Vanessa went to visit her aunt Grace. On this visit, Grace told Vanessa she knew where her daughter was! Vanessa begin a search for the child and found out she was linked to Calla and Gordon Matthews! Vanessa concluded that Calla and Gordon's daughter, Jessie was her daughter, but Calla and Gordon proved otherwise, explaining that Gordon was the child's adoptive uncle.

Chelsea Reardon and Jean-Claude Laval came to Springfield and crashed their car in Phillip Spaulding's as he was driving two teenagers, Dinah Morgan and Kelly Ann Brixton, home from a party. Jean-Claude would later die at Cedars under Ed's son, Dr. Rick Bauer's care, leaving Chelsea to sue Rick -- her sister's stepson -- for malpractice. Fortunately, Phillip convinced Chelsea to reconsider and drop the suit. When Dinah donated blood to an injured Kelly Ann, Ed discovered that Dinah had the same rare blood type as Ross! Vanessa realized that it was Dinah who was her child by Ross, and she told both him and Billy. Although Ross was delighted to have a daughter, Billy was jealous that Vanessa had yet one more link to Ross.

By now Ross and Vanessa had matured, and their relationship was one of deep, abiding friendship based on a shared past. Billy couldn't handle it and began to wonder if divorce was in the cards for him and Vanessa. Dinah herself was a not exactly thrilled, at first, to find out who her parents. Dinah then was kidnapped by a couple named Joe and Shelly Kowalski, who wanted the handsome ransom that the wealthy Henry Chamberlain could afford to pay. With Phillip's help, Ross saved Dinah and welcomed her into his home. With Dorie's urging -- Dinah came to adore Ross (who had helped India adopt Dorie), but because it was her mother who had abandoned her, she had a difficult time bonding with Vanessa. She also found it hard to fit in with the "normal" teens at Springfield High until she began dating a popular young man named Cameron Stewart.

In January 1987, India was pleased to see the growing bond between her young ward, Dorie, and her fellow waif, Dinah Marler. Now that Dinah was contentedly living with Ross after yeras of being shuttled from pillar to post, India convinced Ross to split Dorie's care with her. But in March 1987, upon learning her father was in failing health, India returned to Andora with Dorie in tow. Paul Valere had come to the States and took over running the Art Gallery Cache.

In the spring of 1990, India returned to Springfield after being literally dumped overboard on cruise with her then rich lover. She told Phillip that Dorie was now in boarding school, in Switzerland, although where the money came from with India's father now dead was a big mystery. Phillip just thought that perhaps Dorie was getting money from her rich lovers. That would be proven out when India again returned to Springfield, in November 1998 and stayed for more than a year and had a brief fling with Alan, yet again. Before this, India had remarried and then divorced a rich man and he had adopted Dorie has own. Although, during this second return by India it was learned that India had been left poor by the man, he had apparently agreed to help send Dorie to school and she was going to go to college soon. When India returned yet again, to Springfield, for a visit (in October 2002) -- she told people that Dorie was a young beautiful woman who was not bereft of admirers and dates, and was actually engaged to be married.
