Brief Character History

Gunther Lagosi was introduced in October 1981 as one of the many people who lived with mysterious archaeologist, Quinton R. McCord at McCord's home on Thornway Road. Gunther was also an archaeologist, although he appeared to possibly be a couple of college credits short of being a full fledged independent archaeologist, so Quint hired him as his assistant. But he was much more than an assistant or even Quint's frequent fencing partner; he was Quint's protege.

When Nola Reardon and her friend, Gracie Middleton were first introduced to Gunther, ditzy Gracie the constant film buff noticed his last name and told Nola that he must be "Bela Lugosi." Nola kept on telling her airbrained friend, "No, it's Lagosi!" Nola had other problems with Gunther though, it seemed the young man wouldn't leave her and Quint alone during very romantic moments, when Nola could get Quint alone that is and would interrupt Quint with news of archaeological matters. Gunther also went with Quint and Nola on a very memorable archaeological mission to both London and an island near St. Croix and helped Quint save Nola from the unsavory archaeologist, Silas Crocker and one of his goons, David Lance when Nola was kidnapped by them on the island. David Lance nearly killed Gunther, but Gunther got the better of him and Gunther pushed Lance into the volcano that Silas had originally intended to throw Nola into. Nola was a little more forgiving of Gunther for interrupting her and Quint after Gunther helped save her (he also helped Quint and Nola's older brother, Tony Reardon save Nola again off of a rat invested boat near the Canadian border when Silas and another goon of his, Jamie Loomis kidnapped her again a month later.) Although, Nola was more forgiving, she did set up her friend Gracie on a date with Gunther which was rather a very humorous date with Gracie thinking he was still Bela Lugosi and Gunther just thinking like a lot of men did that she was just a flake.

Gunther would lose his life though in a rather traumatic way and would make Quint have to re-evaluate his priorities. When Silas (with the funding of Samuel Pasquin) tried to steal archaeological artifacts that Quint and the deceased, Professor Archibald Renfield had uncovered in Tanquir (February 1983), Quint and Gunther followed Silas there. Unfortunately, Gunther die in the same cave-in as Silas did! In the aftermath of Gunther's death, Quint decided it was time to reevaluate his life. Ironically though, Gunther's death would help Nola achieve a goal of hers, Quint's reevaluation of his life (after Gunther's tragic death) would include his proposing marriage to Nola.
