Brief Character History
Rafe Rivera’s life was changed forever when he arrived in Springfield in 2007. A teenager desperate for money, Rafe resorted to mugging a local citizen, Josh Lewis. Unfortunately, the inexperienced young man ended up accidentally cutting Josh with his knife. While apologizing profusely, he was apprehended by a police officer and sent to juvenile detention. At juvie, Rafe locked eyes with a pretty teen. There was an instant attraction between Rafe and the dark haired beauty and when he saw a bully harassing her, Rafe created a distraction by yanking a phone off the wall and punching out their teacher, Coop Bradshaw. Daisy was mildly injured in the scuffle and Rafe helped her by sneaking her a bag of ice. In the meantime, Rafe’s mother, Natalia, arrived from Chicago telling him that she was staying in town and trying to hire a lawyer to help him. Days later, Rafe stole some candy off a guard to give to Daisy, the dark haired girl. Unfortunately, the guard found out and angrily confronted Rafe. When the guard manhandled Rafe, Rafe fought back and grabbed the man’s gun. Just then a police officer, Gus Aitoro, entered the room and trained a gun on Rafe. Suddenly a woman—Gus’s wife, Harley-- ran into the room and blurted out to Gus that Rafe was his son! Suddenly, Rafe was dragged off to jail where he was later visited by Gus. All Rafe had ever known was that his father disappeared before Natalia knew she was pregnant. Though Gus tried to bond with his new found son, Rafe would have none of it and slugged him. Soon after, Rafe was released from juvenile detention after Gus spoke to the judge on his behalf. Since Natalia was now intent on settling down in Springfield, Gus suggested that Rafe stay with him and Harley. Rafe was not particularly happy with this until he saw Harley’s daughter—Daisy. Unfortunately, things did not go smoothly at all. When Harley found a syringe in Rafe’s possession, she immediately accused him of being a drug user when in reality he took insulin for his diabetes. In the meantime, Rafe and Daisy told no one that they had met in juvie; in fact they acted like they never knew each other. Meanwhile, things remained tense with Harley when she falsely accused Rafe of stealing money when she saw his hand in the money jar. At the same time, Rafe was intrigued to learn that Gus was a member of the wealthy Spaulding family. He soon became acquainted with his grandfather, Alan, and was very impressed with the man. Finally, things came to a head when Harley saw Rafe kissing Daisy and angrily accused him of accosting her. Daisy tried to explain things but Rafe ran off in disgust. Later, the adults decided that Rafe and Daisy should not live in the same house together and it was decided that Daisy should live with her father. At the same time, the teens were forbidden to see one another but snuck out to the Spaulding gate house for a rendezvous. While they were together, Rafe had an attack from his diabetes and Daisy was forced to call for help. Soon after, Alan got Rafe into a clinical trial for a new painless insulin pump and told Natalia she could thank him by her and Rafe moving into the Spaulding mansion. Despite Gus’s protests, Natalia took Alan up on his offer. At the same time, Natalia was still adamant that Rafe not see Daisy. Unfortunately, Daisy was desperate to spend time with Rafe and offered Natalia more time with Gus for more time with Rafe. When Natalia rejected the offer, Daisy made disparaging comments about Natalia to Buzz, Harley’s father and Natalia’s new boss. Those remarks ultimately cost Natalia her job. When Rafe learned what Daisy had done he instantly rejected her for hurting his mother. However, weeks later he forgave her. Later, Daisy almost got Rafe into trouble when she shoplifted a watch. Rafe quickly called Alan who saved the day by buying the watch himself. Though Rafe was impressed with how Alan handled things, Gus was not. Throughout all of this, Gus’s marriage to Harley was deteriorating while it was obvious that Natalia still had feelings for Gus. Finally a misunderstanding led Gus to believe that Harley had had an affair which led to him seeking comfort from Natalia. In short order, Alan informed Harley (whom he never liked) and Harley and Gus separated.
Meanwhile, Gus was conflicted about his feelings for both Harley and Natalia and Rafe encouraged him to go with whatever woman he loved. Meanwhile, Harley forgave Gus and the pair planned on renewing their vows. Unfortunately, Gus informed his father who left a fake message for Gus saying that Rafe was sick. When Daisy found out, she confronted Alan and ended up being arrested for assaulting the butler, Jeremy. .Luckily, Rafe got Jeremy to drop the charges against her. Weeks later, after declaring their love for each other, Daisy and Rafe made love at the lake house. Unfortunately, Harley came across the pair and realized that they had made love. Furious, she dragged the pair back to the mansion where they met with Gus and Natalia who were equally angry and the teens were forbidden to see each other. However, the pair were unable to stay away from each other and days later, Reva found them kissing. After talking to Daisy about true love, Reva allowed them to use the shack by the docks. Meanwhile, Rafe was a candidate for an experimental diabetes treatment but Rafe declined since he was .afraid it would fail and revealed to Gus that if that happened his mother would be let down. Later, Daisy admitted to a concerned Rafe that she was in trouble but would not give the reason. Afterwards, Rafe tried to con Gus into letting him spend an hour with Daisy. Gus agreed and Rafe told Daisy that he wanted to help her with her problem. In the meantime, Gus and Rafe slowly started to bond with Gus encouraging Rafe to take a trip to Europe since he was still young. Soon after, Daisy stunned Rafe with the news that she was pregnant. Rafe was incredibly supportive until Daisy was forced to tell him that she aborted the baby. Hurt that Daisy did this without consulting him, Rafe turned away from her; a decision that Natalia agreed with. However, Rafe didn’t just turn away from Daisy—he lashed out at everyone. Soon he began drinking and got himself arrested. Remy intervened and brought Daisy to talk to Remy but Remy refused to listen to anything she had to say. Alan bailed Rafe out of jail and Gus and Natalia tried to make Rafe see that he was just as responsible for the pregnancy as Daisy. Meanwhile, at school, Daisy flipped out when some of the students were rude to her during her first meeting as Student Council Vice President. The students were about to have a new election, when Rafe intervened and defended Daisy. Daisy confronted Rafe, saying she knew he still loved her and she pleaded with him to get back together. However, he couldn’t bring himself to. After their talk, Daisy quit coming to school and Rafe barged in on her and started lecturing her about missing school. Soon talk turned to the abortion and Daisy defended her position again to Rafe. She argued that she aborted their baby since she didn’t want his life to be ruined. Daisy tried to explain that if she would have had the baby, Rafe would have felt obligated to stay with her and would probably end up hating her. Unfortunately her explanation fell on deaf ears. As the weeks went by, Daisy was trying to get her life back together while it appeared that Rafe’s was falling apart. An angry-at-the-world Rafe started skipping school and this time it was Daisy’s turn to lecture him about going to school regardless if he hated her or not. Daisy then went to Natalia and Gus about her concerns and Gus grounded Rafe for skipping class. In the meantime, Alan warned Rafe that he would never know what family Gus would choose---his or Harley’s. Alan was proven right when Gus accepted Harley’s invitation to Thanksgiving. Though Rafe was disappointed, Natalia decided to make the most of it by having her and Rafe work at Towers that day. Unfortunately, Rafe was less than happy and, when a customer was rude to Natalia, Rafe suddenly quit and got drunk afterwards. He then caused a scene by coming to Harley’s yelling and throwing things at her house. Later, Daisy went to Rafe and confided in him that ever since the abortion she felt empty. Their talk helped and Rafe finally started softening as he held her. Later, Rafe was unsettled to see Gus kiss Olivia Spencer on the cheek and wondered if Gus marrying his mom was a good idea. Weeks later, Rafe called Olivia on making a move on Gus.
In 2008, it was obvious that Olivia had designs on Gus. To keep Olivia from ruining her wedding day, Natalia locked her in a closet which impressed Rafe. Unfortunately, that caused Olivia to lose out on getting a heart transplant. Upset, Gus devoted even more time to helping Olivia even moving in with her. In the meantime, Rafe and Daisy had grown closer and reunited. After arguing with Natalia about Gus, Rafe defiantly kissed Daisy. Weeks later, Daisy, who was having problems with Harley, suggested that they move in together. After getting an apartment, the pair discovered that they needed money and Daisy hit on the idea of them selling fake ID’s.. Unfortunately, Harley’s new live-in Cyrus caught Daisy and Rafe making fake IDs and put an end to their operation though promised not to turn them in. Not long after, Rafe blew off a meeting with Gus. Tragically, that very day Gus was involved in a motorcycle rushing to the hospital to see a dying Olivia. A badly injured Gus died in surgery and despite protests from Rafe; Natalia donated his heart to Olivia. Though Daisy tried to be there for Rafe, he was more concerned about taking care of his mother and informed Daisy that he would not be moving in with her.
