Brief Character History
In October 1979, Roger Thorpe was a fugitive from justice after his wife, Holly Norris Bauer Thorpe, had shot him three times in the chest, after it looked as though the prosecution's case in the marital rape trial that Holly initiated against Roger was going badly. While on the run, Roger went to Paris, France and charmed plastic surgeon Renee DuBois into altering his face so he could return to Springfield with a new identity. Although they became lovers, Renee was suspicious and made only
minor adjustments, but Roger was too smitten by the beautiful doctor to let her go. Won over by his sincere longing to be with Christina, his daughter with Holly, Renee agreed to marry him and help raise his daughter! Unfortunately for the good doctor, Roger never told her the complete story about himself. Renee was about to learn, but too late, and would meet a grisly end!
In January 1980, Renee was shocked to see news reports revealing that Roger was an international fugitive, and she was urged by Inspector Albert Montand to go to Springfield to help attorney, Mike Bauer track Roger down. The two became instantly attracted to one another. Mike was lonely after losing Elizabeth Spaulding to Dr. Justin Marler, and Renee felt foolish for falling for a criminal like Roger. But a long-term romance was not to be, for Roger - via a bug he had put in Barbara Norris Thorpe's (Holly's mother) home -- eavesdropped on Mike and Renee when they visited Barbara. Renee mentioned that Holly and Christina were gone away from Springfield but did not say where they had gone (Santo Domingo with Dr. Peter Chapman.) Roger confronted Renee in her hotel room, but she refused to tell him Holly and Chrissy's whereabouts. During the altercation, Renee bolted in fear yelling out Roger's name and fell down a stairwell to her death and as Mike Bauer had to watch. Renee took her last breath in Mike's arms.
