Brief Character History
Psychiatrist Will Jeffries, the anglicized name of Guiermo Ybarra, was first introduced in Venezuela, in late March 1987, when his friend from Springfield, Joshua "Josh" Lewis had a business disagreement with his father H.B. Lewis over the running of Lewis Oil division of the conglomerate, Sampson-Lewis. Will and Josh had met earlier between January 1985 and November 1986 when Josh had escaped because of his not being with his longtime love interest Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis (who was married in 1985 to H.B.) Josh returned to Springfield with Will and Will got a job at Cedars Hospital ingratiating himself with the chief of staff, Dr. Ed Bauer and all the rest of the staff, except for perhaps resident psychiatrist, Dr. Eileen Lyndon who right away thought Dr. Will was not trustworthy. Little did the rest of Springfield know how perceptive Dr. Lyndon would end up being. Meanwhile Reva was about to give birth, in early June 1987, to a daughter. Josh and Reva had made love at Lewis cabin in Cross Creek in late 1986 and Josh thought the child was his. But Reva had been informed by Cedars OB-GYN Dr. Margaret Sedwick that the child could be either Josh's or the product of the previous lovemaking Reva had with Josh's half-brother Kyle Sampson who Reva was going to marry (the wedding was called off though by Reva when she found out that Kyle's first wife, Maeve's son Ben was Kyle's) before Josh returned in late 1986. Will secretly overheard Reva and Dr. Sedwick's discussion about the question of the child's paternity and suddenly got a huge grin on his face as though he was the Cheshire cat. Reva came upon Will and was creeped out about his grin and for ever after she too was as suspicious about Will as Dr. Lyndon was. Then Reva gave birth to Marah, named after Josh and Reva's mothers, Martha and Sarah. Reva immediately asked Dr. Sedwick to perform a paternity test. To make ends meet Josh started managing a construction company owned by the ailing Koz Kowolski. Happy with his new niche, Josh looked forward to leading the simple life with Reva and Marah, his buddy Will at his side. He had no inkling of the nightmare to come.
Sally Gleason suspected that Marah's father was really her son, Kyle's, who was about to remarry out of town, but then he was left in a coma after the plane crashed that he and his fiancee were on. Picking up on the tension surrounding Marah's birth, Will -- for reasons he did not reveal -- altered the birth records to indicate that Josh was not Marah's father, but Kyle was. Dr. Sedwick had been charmed by Will into letting him into the Cedars lab, knowing full well that the computer records in the lab had the paternity test results -- the recently divorced Dr. Sedwick had even allowed Will to kiss her. Dr. Sedwick was about to release the results to Reva, but thought there might be something wrong with them, but before Dr. Sedwick could conduct another confirming test, Josh eventually saw the records and told Reva they were finished! He also hastened to add that he had been married in Venezuela to a fellow psychiatrist of Will's named Sonni Carrera. Sonni had presumably died on October 19, 1986 in a hiking accident, having plunged to her death off a suspension bridge. Reva was angry that Josh had withheld this from her, but the attraction between them was so strong that in time they decided to make a go of their romance once again. Then the events of October 1987 came and totally disrupted Reva and Josh's plans.
In 1986 - 1987, one of the Lewis's Springfield business rivals, Alan Spaulding made no secret his desire to take over Lewis Oil and run Sampson-Lewis and for a long time in that year, Josh and Reva had suspected that Alan was involved in a series of accidents at Lewis Oil. (Instead it was an organization named Diamondhead.) Luckiy, by October 1987 -- the Diamondhead Organization had been stopped and Reva and Josh finally felt like they had their life back -- then Alan interceded in a most troubling way.
Alan was still pursuing the president of the Spaulding Foundation, Vanessa Chamberlain Lewis (the former sister-in-law of Josh, who had been married to his brother Billy), in hopes that they could build a corporate dynasty together. But Reva had a raw energy and an unpretentious quality that Alan found irresistible. He hired Reva and prevailed upon her to break the budding relationship between his older sister Alexandra "Alex" Spaulding and H.B. In return, he offered to have paternity tests performed on Marah to get to the bottom of the mystery. Alan was shocked to discover that Marah was, indeed Josh's child! He considered telling Reva the truth but couldn't bring himself to do it, for he wanted Reva to himself. Alan lied and told Reva that Marah was Kyle's, adding that he wanted a relationship with her. Reva was shocked. "Why would you want someone who doesn't want you?" she asked Alan. Alan could only reply, "Why would you?"
Meanwhile from October 19, 1987 to October 30, 1987, Josh thought he was going insane (or at the very least someone was pulling a Halloween prank on him), when he started seeing Sonni alive, in Springfield! Little did Josh know that Sonni was really alive and that Will knew it and had kept this secret from him. Will had bought a confused Sonni to Springfield intent on nefarious motives. He tried to tell Sonni to not actually show up alive, but when other Springfield residents started seeing Sonni, including Reva, Will realized the gig was up and let Josh have a reunion with his supposed recently "departed" wife. Knowing Josh still had feelings for Sonni, Reva set him free to remarry her and took up with Alan. But Alan's first love was still business, and he ultimately proposed to Vanessa. Reva pretended to understand, but she was so livid she planned to take Alan for all he was worth.
Reva had no idea that others in Springfield had determined the truth behind Marah's parentage. Sally felt guilty for having inadvertently perpetuated the lie, and she rushed to Josh and Sonni's quickly planned wedding, on Halloween day 1987, in Hawaii to reveal the truth. However, Alan made Alex intercept her under threat of telling H.B. that Alex knew the truth and had kept it from him. Alex talked Sally into holding off until after the ceremony. As the guests danced and celebrated, Sally was about to drop the bombshell when she dropped dead of a massive coronary! A shocked H.B. realized that life was short, and he proposed to a receptive Alex.
Meanwhile, after Billy's young adult daughter, Melinda "Mindy" Sue Lewis Corday's first husband was killed in a Venezuelan Lewis Oil tanker explosion (set up by Jack Cutler before he was arrested) and then helped her love interest, Rusty get a confession out of drug dealer Nicky Sutton -- and then Mindy got to witness Rusty fall in love with a former client of Nicky's the drug addicted Rose McLaren (Rusty and Rose would later marry, much to Mindy's consternation), Mindy fell for the charms of Will Jeffries -- much to the Lewises dismay (especially Reva.) Soon Mindy found herself enjoying the company of Will and eventually they became lovers. Unbeknownst to Mindy, Will was using her for a means to much bigger ends. And soon Will would find himself getting closer to a much more important target's wife, Sonni Carrera Lewis.
As the year 1987 drew to a close, Sonni adjusted to life in Springfield as Josh's wife but was plagued by a recurring nightmare in which a group of South Americans surrounded her, chanting "Bad girl! Bad girl!" Each time she was saved by Will, clad in a monk's robe, who absolved her of her sins? In January 1988, Alex and Phillip Spaulding (Alan's estranged adopted son) decided to plot to have a merger to join forces with the Lewises and Sampson-Lewis to bring Alan to ruin. H.B. and Josh were hesitant until Alex revealed that Alan had tampered with Marah's paternity test. What neither the Spauldings nor the Lewises knew was that two other people stood to gain from the proposed merger: Sonni and Will.
Sonni was not the shy shrinking violet she appeared to be. Not only was she involved in an ongoing affair with Will, but she was actually Sonni's evil twin sister, Solita! "Sonni" and Will had hatched an elaborate plot in which she was to remarry Josh and encourage the merger with Spaulding Enterprises. The crafty lovers would then kill Josh and make off with a fortune. Sonni and Will enjoyed several rendezvous in Springfield, one of which Reva witnessed and photographed from a neighboring apartment. Although she didn't have the heart to show Josh the pictures, she nonetheless told him she suspected Will and Sonni were carrying on. When Josh confronted the lovers, Sonni innocently replied that she and Will were just planning Josh's surprise birthday party! Josh bought the story.
Sonni, however in February, was beginning to care for Josh in earnest and started to waver about the idea of murdering him. Determined to see it through, Will unilaterally stepped up the plan and set Josh up to plummet to his death in icy waters of the Springfield river in a malfunctioning Jeep. Josh's Jeep plunged off a bridge, but as luck would have it, Reva and Alan were skating nearby. Reva jumped into the freezing water and saved her love, then fought for her own life at Cedars, where she suffered cardiac arrest and went into a coma. While Reva was in her coma, Dr. Lyndon became concerned that Will was somehow involved with Reva being in her state and asked Springfield P.D. Lt. Wyatt to keep an eye on her. Unfortunately Reva couldn't be watched all the time by the Springfield P.D., and one night Sonni sneaked into Reva's room and found her choking on a tube. Sonni considered killing her, but instead when Reva started convulsing, she inexplicably saved her life!
Reva's ordeal jolted Alan into realizing how much he loved her, and he brought in a minister to marry them while Reva lay half-conscious in her hospital bed. He was stunned the next day, though, when Reva came to and thought she'd married Josh. The marriage was annulled, and Alan and Reva planned to have a proper wedding.
In March 1988, then came a new wrinkle -- Sonni was pregnant! Will pressured her to have an abortion and she refused. The conspirators then pannicked at the arrival of Will's parents, Anita and Esteban Ybarra, and Sonni's estranged father, Welles Carrera. Will told his parents that Sonni (whom they knew as Solita) had married Josh because he was terminally ill, and that she would marry Will after Josh's inevitable death! A hard-nosed man who had no sympathy for his errant daughter, Welles Carrera figured out the scheme. Welles had written a mysterious note to Reva to meet him, because he was going to tell her about what he knew, but was fatally stuck by a rental car, driven by Will, shorty after. Reva told Lt. Wyatt she suspected Will, but Lt. Wyatt couldn't show any proof of this. Sonni feared for Josh's life and begged him not to go through with the Spaulding merger, knowing it would seal his fate at Will's hands.
In the meantime, Phillip was sealing Alan's fate in a most contemptuous manner. Unbeknownst to Alex or the Lewises, he set Alan up to lose a fortune in an illegal emerald mine venture. Nonetheless, they still planned to surprise Alan with news of the merger at an upcoming gala. Moments before Alan was to make a speech at the event, in May 1988, Phillip took Alan aside. "The IRS has frozen all your assets," Phillip quietly and delightedly told his father. "The board has had it. You're out."
Mistakenely thinking that Reva was in on the maneuver, a devastated and vilified Alan fled to Mexico. H.B. felt so guilty over his part in Alan's downfall that he called off the merger and sadly informed Alex he couldn't go through with their marriage plans. Alex blamed Phillip, and after discovering the emerald mine scam, she lit into her callous nephew. Sometime later, Phillip and Chelsea Reardon called it quits when she accused him of demanding perfection of everyone but himself. Phillip's best friend, Dr. Rick Bauer (Ed's son) and his younger adopted brother, Alan-Michael Spaulding (Alan was his biological father) were also furious with Phillip, who condescendingly reminded Alan-Michael that he, too would be part of Spaulding Enterprises someday. "Part of?" Alan-Michael said incredulously. "I'm Alan's real son, Spaulding is mine to begin with."
All the turmoil with the Spauldings also affected Sonni and Josh's marriage and how Sonni was to deal with Will. Lewis Oil was back in its original form, and Josh became its president. Reva confronted Sonni, before going to Mexico (despite Lt. Wyatt urging her not to), saying she intended to tell Josh about the affair, but changed her mind when Sonni lost the baby during their heated argument. Sonni then pleaded with Will to call off his plot against Josh. They got into a struggle, and Sonni hit Will over the head, with a rock, in self-defense. Thinking he was dead, she set his lifeless body adrift in his boat. With Will missing, Reva blurted out to Josh that Sonni and Will had had an affair. Then she tracked Alan to Mexico, where she found him working at a seedy bar. Pained to see the mighty Alan Spaulding so down and out, Reva convinced him she had nothing to do with the merger plot and brought him back to Springfield to fight for what was his.
A little while later a resident of Springfield that had nothing to do with Sonni, Josh, Reva or Will would end up inadvertantly having influence in their lives. This resident was Blake Lindsey, a woman Alan was involved with briefly in Venezuela. Blake was a PR person who took a job at Spaulding Enterprises and seemed to be in cahoots with Alan. A matter of fact Blake was sent back to Springfield to spy on Phillip, for Alan. But Blake was harboring her own secret, she had previously lived in Springfield when she was a child (she actually was born in Springfield) -- and was the biological daughter of a long lost enemy -- thought to be dead 15 years earlier -- of the Spauldings (most importantly, Alan), Roger Thorpe! But in the summer of 1988, Blake, in essence was Alan's vehicle for winning back Spaulding Enterprises. Alan sensed correctly that Blake was falling for Phillip, and he began to distrust her (not yet even knowing about her link to Roger.) Alex discovered Alan and Blake's affair and told Reva in hopes of keeping her from marrying into the family. In fact Reva was wavering in her desire to marry Alan, she began falling back in love with Josh, much to Sonni's chagrin.
In the late summer of 1988, Alex started playing two ends against the middle where Reva and Sonni were concerned. Although at first, Alex found an unlikely new friend in Sonni. When Sonni started developing headaches and then ended up thinking she saw a dead Will standing outside her and Josh's house she felt she need a confidante in Alex. Sonni broke down and admitted to Alex that she'd killed Will. Just as Sonni feared that prison was imminent, however, Will turned up really alive and at first with amnesia! At the same time, Ed -- not suspecting Sonni was Solita -- heard of Sonni's background as a psychiatrist and hired her at Cedars. (An event that Dr. Lyndon highly vocally disapproved of.) Sonni now had to act like a real doctor, so she took on Will as her first patient. Her aim was to toy with Will's mind and make him remember events as she colored them. It was during this time that Will and Mindy became involved again, much to the Lewises chagrin. Mindy had helped Rusty and Rose get Nicky Sutton arrested, only to see Rusty and Rose become a pair. On the rebound, Mindy married the seemingly confused Will as her disapproving family watched helplessly. What Sonni and Mindy did not know, though, was that Will's memory had returned and now Will was using both Sonni and Mindy in his plans to bring down the Lewises. Will even had Dr. Lyndon, briefly fired by Ed, when he set up Eileen to have a very public verbal fight in the corridors of Cedars with Sonni over her treatment of Will.
By October 1988, time was running out for Sonni and Will. Reva finally showed Josh the picture of his wife and pal in a tight embrace, and together they went to Venezuela to investigate Sonni (against Lt. Wyatt's wishes.) There they soon met up with Sonni and Will and figured out the criminal lovers' master plan. Thinking fast, not realizing that his memory had returned, Sonni planted the following suggestion in Will's mind: For Will to tell the Venezuela police that Josh, not Sonni, had tried to kill him.
In early November 1988, Josh and Reva made passionate love on the beach as Alan's photographer snapped pictures of them unnoticed. Josh was arrested for trying to kill Will, as Will let Sonni know his memory had returned. Reva then got Will alone in a hotel room and extracted an anguished confession from him and got it on tape. Then Alan showed up to throw his usual monkey wrench into the proceedings by becoming Sonni's love and co-conspirator. Josh confronted them with his shocking discovery that Sonni was not Solita after all, but Sonni herself! (Indeed at this time, Will was the only one who knew that Sonni had been suffering for years from a split personality disorder, not even Sonni knew this about herself, yet.) Later after coming on to Alan at a seedy bar (right in front of Josh), while she was doing a very sensual dance to the popular U2 song at the time, "Shotgun", she got Alan away from Josh (Josh was furious and nearly left the country, even nearly leaving Reva by herself -- Reva had told Josh she was going back to Springfield, until she found some proof about the schemes of Will and Sonni's.) Frantic that things were unspooling in her plot to take control of Josh and even Spaulding Enterprises, Sonni fired a gun and Alan caught the bullet, which left him paralyzed. Meanwhile, in the last week of November 1988, with Josh seperated from Reva -- the fully recovered Will kidnapped Reva and brought her to the same abandoned Carrera house that Sonni was holding Alan. Will then injected Alan with a needle, while Sonni knocked out Reva and prepared to inject her as well! Luckily for Alan and Reva, Josh discovered a hastily written note from Reva, about her suspicions about Will and Sonni and Josh called Rusty down to Venezuela and Rusty and Josh rescued Alan and Reva in the knick of time -- with Will disappearing and Sonni being arrested and sent back to Springfield to face a trial for her illegal schemes. In December 1988, Ed (being flown in Alex's jet, his friend Springfield Journal investigative reporter, Fletcher Reade also came along) briefly came down to Venezuela and treated Alan and Reva for their wounds caused by Sonni and Will, respectively. Alan was left briefly paralyzed, but started in January 1989 hiding the fact he had recovered, when proof came to him that Blake's long lost unlamented father, Roger Thorpe was still alive and Alan was willing to do anything to bring Roger down and even kill him.
In January 1989, Sonni stood trial for the still missing Will's attempted murder. When Sonni's inconsistent testimony left everyone baffled, Reva and Rusty investigated her in Venezuela and found her twin sister Solita's remains in a grave, at a monastery, in Venezuela near the now run down and abandoned Carrera ranch. They wrongly presumed that, Sonni had evidentally killed Solita and taken on her personality as an alter ego! Back in Springfield Will made his reappearance, while Sonni finally unraveled and lost her "Solita" persona. Will, again disguised as a monk, took Sonni down to Venezuela when he became concerned that Reva and Rusty were about to discover their duplicitous schemes (Will still thought Sonni was still the "Solita" personality.) A confused Sonni woke up at the Carrera ranch and not realizing that Reva was inside still investigating Solita's death set fire and burned down the place. Luckily Rusty sensing that Reva's life was in danger, saved his sister in the nick of time. Unfortunately, Reva seperated from Rusty (despite Rusty's pleas) when she decided to confront her nemesis Sonni! Meanwhile Sonni, not knowing where Will was (he had disappeared again -- only to show up at Rusty's hotel room), briefly held Will's mother Anita Ybarra hostage at gunpoint -- trying to find out more about her past with Will. Sonni then got another headache when Anita repeated the words from her nightmares of "Bad girl! Bad girl!" and left the confused older woman by herself. Reva caught up with Sonni as she was about to repeat the accident that nearly killed her in October 1986, by deciding to kill herself by flinging herself off a suspension bridge (and for a couple of minutes Sonni contemplated pointing her gun at and throwing Reva off the bridge, instead.) Reva got Sonni to finally remember that when she was a teenager she had an affair with Will and her father Welles discovered them together, and had mistaken her for Solita (Welles had Sonni whipped with his belt.) But Welles anger wasn't satisfied and when a confused Solita came home she too was beaten by Welles, while Sonni -- protected by Anita Ybarra -- had to watch in agony. Solita then killed herself by hanging herself in the nearby monastery. That's when a guilty Sonni (who hadn't cleared up Welles' confusion) took on the personality of her now deceased twin as a defensive mechanism. Reva got Sonni to come away from the bridge, to almost have the whole bridge nearly collapse in the ravine below with Reva and Sonni on it (Anita Ybarra's gun did go down the ravine.) Luckily, a guilty Will (who'd sabotaged the bridge in an attempt to play heor but then wasn't sure if he could actually do it) admitted to Rusty and a newly rearrived Josh where the two women had gone and Josh and Rusty saved both Reva and Sonni in the knick of time. Rusty then arrested Will and all of them returned to Springfield. Sonni spent about two months in an institution but made such a fine recovery that Ed rehired her at Cedars (Ed also rehired Dr. Lyndon.) Will was another matter, though, disgraced by Sonni's confessions to Reva, Ed fired him -- when he admitted he had tampered with Marah's paternity tests (this reunited Josh with Marah and Reva and Reva and Josh got married {after his divorce from Sonni was finalized} later in November 1989.)
Although disgraced and fired by Ed, neither Rusty or D.A. Ross Marler could find enough evidence to keep Will locked away in jail or go to prison and Reva and Josh just didn't want anything to do with him or Sonni for that matter. Unfortunately Will would continue to be a thorn in the side of Reva, Josh and their respective families, the Shaynes and the Lewises. In April of 1989, the Shayne family celebrated the double wedding ceremony of Rusty and Rose, and the remarriage of Rusty and Reva's parents, Hawk and Shayne. Rusty had also gotten Billy Lewis (Josh's brother and Mindy's father) to get Mindy out of town (despite her protest) to save her from Will's clutches. Mindy agreed to her father and Rusty's request, when Will's treachery came to the fore. Desperate to get Mindy back, on April 25, 1989, Will went to Reva and Josh's house at Reva Bend and confused Marah's baby-sitter, Elise that he was there to watch after Marah and that Elise could go out on her date. When Elise returned not only did she face a furious Reva, but also faced an equally furious just released from the mental institution, Sonni, because Will had kidnapped Marah! Elise at first thought that perhaps Sonni was in on the kidnapping of Marah and told Reva this, but the more Sonni spoke, the more Reva realized Sonni had nothing to do with this. But that didn't stop Will from trying to frame Sonni for the kidnapping. Will left Marah in the care of his mentally unbalanced mother, Anita Ybarra. Will planned to play hero and "save" the child so that a grateful Josh would tell him Mindy's whereabouts! Rose suspected he was the culprit, when she interrogated Sonni herself, and confronted him. A struggle ensued, and Rose hit her her head on a rock and died, when Will started approaching her. Will was at wits end. Sonni then found Marah with Anita Ybarra and convinced Reva, Rusty and Josh that she was not the kidnapper. When Rose's body was found, an anguished Rusty was certain that Will had iced her. But the D.A.'s office dismissed the evidence as circumstantial and let Will off. Determined to nab him, Rusty turned in his badge and became a private eye. In July 1989, when Billy and Mindy returned to Springfield, Rusty was able to convince Mindy to help him get the goods on Will. Panicked by Rusty's investigation, Will had Anita confess to Marah's kidnapping, and she was duly committed. But by the fall of 1989, Will himself seemed to be in need of a padded room, as he began hearing Rose's voice. In time Will realized Mindy was gaslighting him, and he drugged her and held her at gunpoint. Worried that he'd still be put in prison by Rusty, on October 30, 1989, Will took Mindy to the out of Springfield, Cliff Hotel and lied to the staff that he and Mindy were on a honeymoon and got the honeymoon suite. Will attempted to throw Mindy off of the balcony of their suite, just when Mindy came to and out of her drugged induced state. Fortunately Will told Sonni by accident where he was going with Mindy and Sonni alerted Rusty and Josh. Rusty arrived at the scene with Josh and Sonni and shot at Will, who ended up going off the balcony himself to his death. Before Will's plunge, he was able to stop Mindy herself from going off and Rusty was able to grab Mindy's other hand, and with Sonni and Josh's help, pulled her up before she would have fallen herself. Although Billy hoped Mindy would settle down with Rusty, she elected to remain behind with her family when Rusty went to Tulsa to become chief of detectives. Mindy was also able to get her marriage to Will annulled. But Mindy would still not learn the lesson about her experiences with the devious and very unlamented, in death, Will Jeffries and about year later would end up in a relationship with the equally devious Roger Thorpe.
