Stephen Markle

Llanview Presence

Mel Hayes (April 1997 to January 1999; July 21st and 22nd, 2008)

At a Glance

Stephen Markle created the role of Mel Hayes in April, 1997. Mel was a renowned journalist and loose cannon, whose charming, yet self-destructive ways threaten to cause problems with the woman in his life, Dorian Lord.

Stephen was born in Toronto, and raised there as well as in England, California, Arizona and New York. After graduating from high school in Sedona, Arizona, Stephen returned to his homeland and attended the National Theatre School of Canada. Upon graduation Stephen remained in Canada, playing lead roles at the Stratford Festival and establishing himself as a dynamic force on the Toronto theater scene, where he collaborated in such productions as the world premiere of George F. Walker's play, Zastrozzi, and co-wrote and starred in the musical, Out to Brunch.

Returning to the United States in the late '70s, Stephen played Petruchio in Taming of The Shrew at Milwaukee Rep, and was a member of the original company at the Denver Theater Centre, where, among other roles, he played Ishmael in Moby Dick. In New York, Stephen became associated with the Public Theatre, and starred in such productions as Henry IV Part One, Mary Stuart, Cinders and Soapy Smith. His Broadway credits include Othello, and Edward Albee's The Man Who Had Three Arms.

Stephen moved west in 1989, and guest starred in such television series as Wiseguy, Tour of Duty and Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the television movie, The Haunted. His film credits include Ticket to Heaven, Without a Trace, Invasion USA and Manhattan Project. Stephen's love of theater continued, and his many west coast credits include regional productions of Measure for Measure, The Tempest, Oleanna, Hecuba and Angels in America.

Stephen cites among his favorite regional theater roles, Iago in Othello at Baltimore's Center Stage, where he was an associate artist for three seasons, and Astrov in Uncle Vanya at the Huntington Theatre in Boston.

Daytime fans may remember Stephen as crooked cop Lt. Ted Loomis on The Edge of Night.

Like his character, Stephen is an accomplished writer. He is a published poet and is working on a novel entitled Handmade Heart. Stephen lives in Manhattan with his wife, actress and writer Leslie Monthan, and their cat, Buffy.
