Passions Marks Second Year on the Air

by Dan J Kroll

Congratulations to Passions, which celebrates its second anniversary on July 5th.

This past year proved to be a big year for the fledgling soap. Passions racked up an impressive eight Emmy nominations, though the show did not earn any victories. The total placed it as the fourth most-nominated soap of the year. Included among the Emmy nominations were the show's first acting nomination, earned by Josh Ryan Evans (Timmy) in the Outstanding Younger Actor category. Passions was also nominated for writing.

In the ratings department, Passions has moved into ninth place, ahead of ABC's Port Charles. Passions ratings hit a 2.0 for the week of June 4th. The tally, however, is well off the show's record high rating of 2.9 during the week of December 25th, 2000. Still, the newest of the ten soaps currently on the air has made steady gains in each of the last few Sweeps periods.

Passions has been a favorite of critics since its debut. TV Guide has praised the show as the best of the bunch on numerous occasions. Indeed, Passions' quirky storytelling has a lot of people talking.

Several months ago, NBC agreed to pick up Passions for a third season so it looks like there will be Harmony in daytime television for some time to come.
