Emily in Paris Season 5 is here, serving up bold fashion risks and plenty of sizzling romance. The Netflix hit drama series brings an unexpected paring this season between Mindy Chen (played by Ashley Park) and Alfie (played by Lucien Laviscount). Alfie also happens to be the ex-boyfriend of Mindy’s best friend Emily (played by Lily Collins). The romantic chemistry between the two is undeniable through the season, however, when Mindy’s ex Nicolas (played by Paul Forman) comes back into the picture, their whole storyline takes a surprising turn.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Collins shared that both she and Park were surprised to learn about the new romance in Emily in Paris Season 5. Park said,

“I was really excited…I really haven't had any scenes with Lucien and I think that I was really excited that we were going to be able to bring out a different dynamic in each other, perhaps, and see each other in a new way.”

What happens between Mindy and Alfie in Emily in Paris Season 5?

A major emotional takeaway from the last season of Emily in Paris was the collapse of Emily and Alfie’s relationship, along with Mindy and Nico’s. As Season 5 of the hit Netflix sets in motion, we find Mindy and Alfie at Gabriel’s restaurant, enjoying a light-hearted moment over wine. There is clear attraction between the two, with Alfie even mentioning that Mindy deserves someone better.

Later in Emily in Paris Season 5, while on a business trip, the two end up in a ballroom in Rome, as they set the dance floor on fire with their intense chemistry. Mindy and Alfie end up sharing some intimate moments together.

But then comes the downward spiral as both Mindy and Alfie feel awkward for getting together without Emily’s knowledge. They keep seeing each other, wondering if this is just temporary. They ultimately decide to share the truth with Emily, who had meanwhile come to know about her best friend and ex’s affair from elsewhere. But the two friends manage to resolve their differences, thankfully.

Just when things seem to be settling down, Nico returns to win back Mindy. Nico has left his family business, JVMA, for her. This is what Mindy wanted from Nico all along. Poor Alfie is left wondering about his choices when Mindy gets back with Nico and accepts his marriage proposal. Needless to say, Alfie is brokenhearted. Mindy, too, is struggling, having realized that she still has feelings for him.

While speaking to Decider, creator of Emily in Paris, Darren Star said,

“I think it wasn’t meant to be more than that. It was a little bit of a fling. But I think they really discovered and caught feelings for each other. And I think you got to see why. Their chemistry together was terrific.”

Star also hints that there is more to the love triangle than what we saw in Emily in Paris Season 5. Star said,

“Nicolas was always in Mindy’s mind as this fantasy guy who really hurt her and came back and offered her surprisingly everything. And I think she was really quick to cast Alfie aside as a little bit of a fling when Nico came back in the picture… And he was. But I think it’s going to complicate the situation. When we hear about a Season 6, I think their storyline will be a little messy.”
