Lena Dunham’s Too Much will not return for a Season 2: Here’s what the creator revealed

Fans of Too Much have some sad news, as the series will not be returning for another season, at least for now. The news was made official by the series' creator, Lena Dunham, who said during the FYC panel, held last week:

"Our intention was always to make Too Much as a limited series. It was meant to feel like a classic transatlantic love story but with time to really dig into the complexities that a film doesn’t have the space for."

Created by husband and wife Luis Felber and Lena Dunham, the series featured Megan Stalter, Will Sharpe, and Michael Zegen as the leads. The series was released exclusively on Netflix this July, giving viewers a complete set of ten episodes, with each episode running between thirty minutes and an hour.

The official synopsis of the series on Netflix read:

"When a heartbroken New Yorker moves to London hoping for a love story, she falls for an indie musician who's anything but the typical romantic hero."

Viewers will be surprised to know that Too Much does draw inspiration from Lena Dunham's time living abroad, where she ended up meeting and finding love with a musician. However, she revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that while it draws inspiration from that episode, the series tells a different story, making it only based on pieces of her life.

The door of Too Much Season 2 isn't fully closed

While Lena has confirmed that Too Much Season 2 is not happening, she did tell The Hollywood Reporter:

"Who knows — maybe there will be a time down the line when it feels right to check in on them again,” she said. “But right now I’m pulling a Mary Poppins and heading on to the next (imaginary) family that needs me."

Fans of Too Much will have to take this update with a pinch of salt. For now, the release of Season 2 remains just a possibility with nothing planned and nothing confirmed.

She mentioned that even though she loved thinking about what Jessica and Felix's future might look like, she and her husband agreed the story felt complete, with the season closing with a wedding.

Talking about where Too Much stands now, Lena Dunham added:

"In terms of the second season, we’re not there yet. But when I think about where these characters would go, when Luis and I talk about it, what we’re really thinking about is that marriage is not the end of a love story — it’s the beginning."

If a second season comes out in the future, it would likely focus on how the couple handles real life together after their wedding, showing their challenges, growth, and what happens beyond the happy ending.

Too Much Season 1 ending explained

Season 1 of the series ends with Jess and Felix ending up with each other after their traumatic pasts, with Jess dealing with her breakup from a long relationship and Felix suffering from both parental neglect and mistreatment by his nanny.

Another turn in the finale comes after Jess's dog, Astrid, passes away, which leads to another argument between the couple. However, things get fine after Jessica forgives him for his affair with another woman at the environmental protest.

Viewers also saw Felix proposing to her, and the two end up getting married in the season finale. After the wedding, Felix is seen teasing Jess:

"How long do you wanna stay married?"
