Neuromancer is a classic cyberpunk novel written by William Gibson in 1984 and is now being adapted into a TV series by Apple TV+. It is also said that the book has contributed to the development of the whole genre of cyberpunk and has influenced numerous sci-fi works, films, and even the manner in which we have come to think about AI.

For many years, the fans referred to it as unfilmable due to its non-linear world and concepts. However, this time around, with talented artists and powerful production teams in the background, Apple is attempting to bring the neon high-tech world of Gibson to the screen.

Neuromancer will be a combination of futuristic espionage, poignant emotional suspense, and a shadowy, noir mood. It attempts to remain faithful to the spirit of the novel but puts a spin on the tale to present it to a more contemporary audience.

Neuromancer: production and release

The adaptation was officially greenlit in February 2024, with Apple TV+ revealing that Neuromancer would comprise 10 episodes. Graham Roland is the showrunner, and J.D. Dillard is the director of the pilot.

Principal filming began in July 2025, the date being selected to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the publication of the original novel. As per Callum Turner's recent interview with ScreenRant, the team completed filming six weeks ago, with active participation from the author William Gibson himself.

"William Gibson was a part of the process and you know, it's his book, it's his vision, it's all in. And I think we did a brilliant job. I'm excited and everyone is really happy with it....The thing about Neuromancer that's so beautiful is that it's a world that could exist. It's not a world that, you know, you have to think "Oh, what's that, what's that?" It's things that we recognise and everything's incredibly tangible and we did a good job."

As of this moment, there is no definite premiere date for Neuromancer. But industry sources and streaming trackers indicate that the show is expected to release on Apple TV+ in early 2026. This is a reasonable schedule, given the scale of the production and the amount of visual complexity a cyberpunk plot can contain. In the meantime, more updates can be expected by the fans through teasers and trailers. The initial behind-the-scenes teaser, which was shared in July 2025, already provides a little glimpse of the style and atmosphere of the show.

The Neuromancer cast is thrilling and full of talent. Callum Turner assumes the lead role of Case, a weary and troubled hacker who drives the story. Briana Middleton plays Molly, a cybernetically implanted assassin and a vicious razor-girl with her reflective eyes and lethal accuracy.

The supporting cast is no weaker. Joseph Lee stars as Hideo, Mark Strong stars as Armitage, Clémence Poesy stars as Marie-France Tessier (aka Lady 3Jane), Peter Sarsgaard stars as John Ashpool, and Emma Laird stars as Linda Lee. Dane DeHaan, Max Irons, Andre De Shields, and Marc Menchaca will also make recurrent appearances in the show.

The series is headed by Roland and Dillard behind the camera, and major production companies have been engaged in Neuromancer, including Skydance Television, Anonymous Content, and DreamCrew Entertainment. With such a talented cast and creative team, there is no doubt that Apple is seeking to do justice to the legendary cyberpunk novel by William Gibson, providing it with all the scale, depth, and quality that it rightfully deserves.

What to expect

Neuromancer adapts the dark and cyberpunk world of the original novel: a world of hackers, giant corporations, corrupted authorities, and luxury technology. Case, a troubled hacker, and Molly, a razor-girl with powerful upgrades on her body and an enigmatic past, are at the heart of the story. The two join forces in a daring robbery that drags them into a life-threatening trap of AIs and corporate intrigues, pitting their free will against digital dominance.

The show, visually and thematically, is doing something that fans have wished for decades: a faithful, gritty, and stylish adaptation of the world of William Gibson rather than a sci-fi remake. The initial teaser, set in the neon-lit bar “Chatsubo,” already suggests a dark, immersive, and atmospheric aesthetic.

Apple has a global platform, which means that Neuromancer can expose a whole new generation to the world of Gibson’s cyberpunk, as well as provide long-time fans with the visual experience they so desired.
