The Innocent Season 1 Episode 1 recap: Mateo's deadly mistake changes his life forever

Netflix's Spanish mystery thriller The Innocent Season 1 keeps you hooked till the end. Oriol Paulo serves as the director and is based on Harlan Coben's book. It follows Mateo Vidal, who mistakenly kills someone at a party and gets arrested for negligent homicide. Things get twistier when he tries to rebuild his life with his partner, Olivia, and fate takes a nasty turn once again.

The mystery thriller features Mario Casas, Jose Coronado, Ana Wagener, and Gonzalo De Castro, to name a few. It has eight episodes in total with an average runtime of an hour or so.

The Innocent Season 1 Episode 1 begins with a man getting a buzz cut in prison. The scene shifts to a flashback in a club where Mateo, a bright law student, tells his brother Isma that he's leaving the party. Isma asks him to stay back, but Mateo bolts out. While leaving, he encounters a woman, and as they flirt their way back to the dance floor, the woman's partner, Hugo, gets jealous. He threatens Isma and orders him to take Mateo away from his friend. However, the argument heats up. Marcos initiates a fight with Mateo. It breaks into a complete brawl. Out of rage, Mateo pushes Dani, and his head hits some rocks. This unfateful night changes Mateo's life entirely. The police arrest him as we get a sneak peek into his trial. He gets four years in prison.

In prison, he leads a quiet life, mostly regretting his action. Unfortunately, his parents passed away in a car crash.

During his first furlough, he meets a woman at a pub called Olivia Costa, and they instantly hit it off. But he hides from her that he's on furlogh. But a couple of years later, they reunite at Isma's firm. Here's more about it

The Innocent Season 1 Episode 1 recap: Mateo reunites with Olivia

After serving time, when Mateo finally comes out of prison, Isma hires him as a paralegal in his firm. He tasks him to hire candidates for a case, and there he meets Olivia all over again. Mateo finally confesses the truth about his life, and they bury their past behind them to build a future together. At this point, it seems like Mateo's finally building a life that he once dreamt of. However, his Isma has a stroke and passes away, leaving Mateo all alone. But Olivia does not leave his side.

Cut to four years later, Olivia finds that she's pregnant, and they rejoice. That's until he sees Dani's father in the hallway. Two months later, they move they relocate to a bigger house. He also finds out that Hugo and Eva are their neighbors, and it's too strange to be a coincidence.

The Innocent Season 1 Episode 1 recap: Mateo meets Sonia, Dani's mother

Mateo receives a text from Sonia informing him that she needs to talk to him. When Mateo drops Olivia off at the airport, someone keeps an eye on them. Then the car follows Mateo to a museum. In the museum, Mateo meets with Sonia, and we find out that she's Dani's mother. But something strange happens. Mateo starts to converse with her like he's Dani. However, he finally reveals that Olivia is pregnant.

Matt then leaves for his work, and there he receives a message from Olivia about a strange man. He tries to contact her, but she goes offline. He then contacts the hotel where she's supposed to be in but they reveal that she is not there.

The Innocent Season 1 Episode 1: Mateo receives a suspicious video of Olivia, and a strange man threatens him

Mateo grows nervous, and while he's driving, he receives another video from that mysterious man, and it just shows the room number and some wigs and shoes. In another video, Mat sees Olivia in bed, and the man rings him up and threatens him that he knows about his dark past. Mat gets hit by a car, and a bald man comes out of the suspicious-looking car and points his gun right at him. But when he pulls the trigger, there's nothing. It looks like someone is threatening Mat. Mat decides to hire a P.I., Zoe, to find out further. Elsewhere, Sonia reveals that Jamie, her husband, might be seeing someone else. As Mat starts to investigate, Olivia rings him up and sounds perfectly normal. This leaves Mat and the viewers totally confused. In the closing scenes of the episode, we find Olivia in her room with a bag of cash.
