The stars of daytime are hitting the stage for a one-of-a-kind reading of Agatha Christie stageplays. The readings will combine the drama of daytime and the mystery of two of Christie's stories, and make for a truly memorable evening.
What soap fan doesn't love a good whodunit? Well, mystery novels and soap operas are about to collide in a fun new way that's sure to entertain audiences. Next month, the Los Angeles-based Soap Fan Mystery Theatre kicks off with a new series of readings, featuring some of your favorite daytime stars. First up is Agatha Christie’s The Unexpected Guest, starring three stars of All My Children, actress Stefanie Powers, and a former Guiding Light favorite.
In The Unexpected Guest, Michael Starkwedder, played by Emmy winner Vincent Irizarry, accidentally drives his car into a ditch on a foggy night. He then wanders into a nearby house to use the phone. The unexpected guest then discovers Laura Warwick (Powers) standing over her dead husband’s body holding a smoking gun… With a houseful of suspects -- including Adam Mayfield (Scott Chandler, AMC) and Emmy winner Jacob Young (JR Chandler) -- to choose from, the audience is kept guessing right up until the shocking climax.
Robert Newman (ex-Josh Lewis, Guiding Light) appears as the police inspector. Constance Towers (Helena Cassadine, General Hospital) is also slated to appear, and the show promises that "mystery guests" from the world of daytime will also drop in.
The performance of The Unexpected Guest will be held Saturday, February 20 (8:00 pm).
The second reading in the series is Spider's Web, also by Agatha Christie. This reading features All My Children's Young and Mayfield, along with their co-star Ricky Paull Goldin (Jake Martin, AMC), who will appear as a police inspector investigating murder and mayhem at a country estate. Juliet Mills (ex-Tabitha Lenox, Passions) and her soap vet husband, Maxwell Caulfield (ex-Pierce Riley, AMC) will also appear. This reading will also feature some surprise guests.
Performances of Spider's Web will be held Saturday, March 27 (8:00 pm) and Sunday, March 28 (2:00 pm).
The readings are being produced by Jacob Young and Mark Rozzano. The pair worked together previously on Broadway in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, where Young appeared as Lumière and Rozzano served as production manager.
While mystery buffs can see some of Christie's work on cable channels, they don't often get the chance to see her stageplays done in person. Rozzano tells soapcentral.com that it's been "more than 40 years" since there has been such a high-profile reading of Agatha Christie's work in the U.S."
While soap operas hold records as being some of the longest-running forms of dramatic entertainment, Dame Agatha Christie earned a few honors of her own. Christie is the most widely published author of all-time. The combined total of her book sales are second only to the Bible. Her stageplay, The Mousetrap, has been running in London's West End for 57 continuous years.
The Soap Fan Mystery Theatre readings will take place at the WGA Theatre located at 135 South Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills, CA. Reserved seating is $49.50. A limited number of VIP tickets will be sold for each performance, which include premium seating, a post-show meet and greet, and a photo opportunity with the stars. The cost of the VIP package is $150 per ticket. Additionally, two-show subscriptions and group discounts are also available. Free parking is provided for all performances!
