Soapcentric: Best and worst of the week (November 10, 2014)

A weekly look at the best and worst episodes of the previous week, and what made our choices hot or not. This week Days of our Lives took viewers on a rollercoaster ride, while The Young and the Restless was as dizzying as a ride on the teacups.

This week, one of my favorite soaps, The Young and the Restless, was almost unbearable to watch. Days of our Lives, which can often be a roller-coaster ride, was at the peak of amusement for me.

THE BEST
Days of our Lives on Wednesday was spot-on. As someone who can never find her keys, I loved that Daniel could not find his. Soap opera characters usually have major problems, not mundane ones like "I forgot to take my clothes out of the dryer."

I was afraid that Theresa was going to go the "I'll pretend I am pregnant" route. Thankfully, there will be no pregnancy pillow or stealing someone's baby.

I thought we would have to wait another day to see her learn she was not pregnant. There, in front of Brady, Kayla told her, "There is no child." It was a great take by Brady, who had bought the idea that she was pregnant. He had a look of "I hate you" and "I was a fool to believe." I almost felt sorry for Theresa. Made me recall Kristen taking the embryo and planting it in herself.

Another human scene was between Maggie and Daniel. I have friends who swear the best part of parenthood is grandparenthood. When he balked that Parker had too many toys, she said he was not gong to take away her right to spoil her grandson.

There were lots of hot love-making scenes. There was a time that ABC touted love in the afternoon instead of gunshots in the afternoon. Days had a good hot and heavy scene between Abby and Ben. The flashback of Eve and J.J. getting it on was great.

A moment later, Eve was at the door. Not so perfect timing for J.J. That scene let viewers see how sneaky Eve can be in all things. When Paige asked why she was there, Eve scooped the royalty payment from Jennifer's desk, shoved it in her purse, and pulled it out of her purse to show that she had stopped over to give the royalty check from Jack's book to Jen.

The best story of the day was the revelation of Aiden's secret. Hope pulled up the story on her computer. He was accused of murdering his wife, but the reveal did not go the usual soap opera route of her reading the article, investigating what happened, and waiting for Aiden to come forward. In a heart-crushing scene, Aiden told Hope what had happened. For once, Hope did not do a holier than thou moment. The great thing about this is the viewer can wonder if Aiden was innocent or if he is a homicidal maniac.

THE WORST
Soaps are all about tune in tomorrow, not turn off right now. The Young and the Restless had me wanting to turn off the show and put a pillow over my head. I couldn't do that because I have to watch all the soaps all the time. I can't miss anything that might be important. Thursday would not have mattered, since nothing happened. It's November, it's sweep time. Memo to Y&R brass: This is when you pull out all the viewing stops. Wait, it did pull out the stops. It made me want to stop viewing.

Grace's visit to Sharon was seemingly worthless. I hate it when soaps play catch-up time on long-gone characters. In about five minutes, the not-in-the-know viewer learned she'd found Cassie as a baby and given her back to Sharon. We also learned she was a "ho" who will go after any man as long as his name is Nick. It is never good when a soap asks the questions viewers would. Why didn't Grace call or text Sharon instead of just knocking on Sharon's door, just like Sharon pondered?

Seeing Nikki popping breath mints was fun at first. Now it is akin to everyone on The Bob Newhart Show saying, "Hello, Bob." That gave many a college student permission to hoist a beer. Where is my Miller Lite when I need it?

Victor went to visit Chelsea to invite her and Connor to attend a family dinner. In typical Victor fashion, he blustered when he realized Billy had moved in with Chelsea. He did not even see Connor. The way Victor interacts with family, especially children, makes him human. But nope -- grandson in the next room, and Victor left. Not for a meeting, but just to go home.

Nick told Nikki he does not want to go to dinner because Victor will gloat. Cue actor, Victor arrived. Nick did not want to hear him. Nikki, in one of her dopiest lines, told Nick to hear him out. She was certain Victor wouldn't gloat. Victor's full name is Victor "I told you so" Newman. He gloated, he yelled, and he almost said, "I told you so."

Please stop with computer stuff. Maybe the show has a tie-in deal with Dell Computers. At least twice a week, we see someone at the computer -- Billy, Kevin, Adam.

As for the Michael and Lauren scene, it seemed as if the moment he was going to tell Lauren he had cancer, he decided to take her home and pop a blue pill. Talk about a limp scene. Tell her already.

Over at Adam's hideaway, a creepy woman in a wheelchair went to see him. I was glad to see Doris' wheelchair. Too bad Doris was not in it. Shouldn't she have rolled in to help Sharon in her crisis? The one interesting moment was wondering who the blonde in the wheelchair was. That would have made me want to turn in tomorrow. No need to wonder. We learned she was his grandmother.

Now for the not so cliffhanger scene. Adam decided it was time to take off his bandages to see what he would look like. We already knew. Thanks to nonstop promotion by CBS, our new Adam will look just like Passion's Fox Crane, with a bit of Revenge's Patrick tossed in. Michael Muhney, who had the role prior to Justin Hartley, is 6'1" and Hartley is 6'3".

Maybe the show used the stretching rack Days of our Lives used when they brought back the thought-to-be-dead Roman. 6'2" Drake Hogestyn took over for 5'11" Wayne Northrop. Trust me -- two inches of height is a big deal. I am or was 5'2". I broke my back earlier this year and slid down to 5 feet. Everyone has been telling me I look shorter. I hope someone tells Adam, "You look different, and you had a growth spurt while you were gone."
