Lane grew up in Dalton, Georgia. Lane's parents were active in community theatre so it's no wonder why Lane got into acting. He began doing high school plays in which Lane refers to as "a desperate attempt to be noticed in a school that worshipped football players." Lane graduated Cum Laude holding a degree in speech and Theatre from Middle Tennessee University. Lane performed at The Alley theatre in Houston, Texas, and then moved to New York to study his craft. He spent the next two years studying and doing plays and regional theatre. After this, Lane moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to do local theatre.

His first contract role came in 1981 on Days of our Lives as Dr. Evan Whyland, followed by a contract role on Santa Barbara in the role of Mason Capwell, a role in which he is remembered by fans. After a seven month sabbatical to travel the world, Lane accidentally began doing comedy. Lane went to the East Coast to search for more daytime work, but was hired on a comedy pilot. So Lane spent the next ten years in sitcoms. He starred in four television series including The Mommies and Good & Evil with Teri Garr. Other notable television appearances include guest-starring roles on such hit series as Scrubs (playing Elliot's Dad), The Practice, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Just Shoot Me, Lois & Clark, Seinfeld, Coach, The Golden Girls and Married With Children, to name just a few.

As a stage actor, Lane has performed such roles as Hamlet, MacBeth, Petruchio, Benedick, Prospero, Henry V and Cyrano de Bergerac in companies from San Diego to Providence. He has completed six European concert tours and worked as a consultant with Walt Disney Attractions on projects in Paris and Tokyo, where he served as producer for the grand opening ceremonies for Tokyo DisneySea. As artistic director for the Santa Susana Repertory Company, a professional resident theater company in Ventura County, Lane has produced and/or directed over thirty productions and guided the company from its inception. He is also the founder and co-artistic director for the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival in Thousand Oaks, now in its sixth season.

Lane enjoys gardening, fishing and just hanging out with his boys. Lane and his two sons live in the Los Angeles area
