Dragon Ball is known for its exciting and emotional moments in anime. A big reason for this is the powerful transformations. The forms don’t just come with a boost in power levels, but they also show how they’ve grown. Most notably, they often change the direction of the fights.
From iconic moments to surprise twists, some transformations have truly left fans stunned. Here are 10 transformations that left fans ' jaws on the floor.
List of Dragon Ball Transformations
1. Super Saiyan (Frieza Saga)
Dragon Ball transformed in a major way when Goku went Super Saiyan for the first time. It went on Planet Namek after Frieza had murdered Krillin. The explosion of Goku's anger had led to a great fluctuation in his powers. His hair turned golden, and his eyes turned green-blue. Even his voice turned serious.
This transformation horrified Frieza and stunned fans everywhere. It was the first time anyone had this legendary Saiyan form in over 1000 years. Everything about this transformation has become iconic. From the background music to the voice acting, this moment lives rent-free in the heads of many.
2. Perfect Cell (Cell Saga)
Dragon Ball took things to a new level when Cell reached his perfect form. He absorbed Android 17 to become Semi-Perfect and absorbed Android 18 to become Perfect. At this point, Cell’s appearance changed completely. He looked cooler, taller, and more human.
As Cell was about to achieve perfection, the sky opened and was ready to accept a new deity. Lightning ran through the skies, and nothing could stop the transformation. The majority of viewers were hyped for what followed, as was Vegeta. Perfect Cell was one of the most deadly villains at this point, and his transformation matched his energy. This transformation was befitting.
3. Super Saiyan 2 (Cell Saga)
Dragon Ball shocked fans again when Gohan reached Super Saiyan 2. This happened during the Cell Games. Although Gohan had always kept his power to himself, something changed after Cell destroyed Android 16. Gohan was exploding with energy and a great deal of anger. His once-calm face became fierce, his hair became more spiky, and lightning encircled him.
Gohan became the first person to ever reach Super Saiyan 2. Everyone watching could feel the power shift. Even Goku was proud. Fans couldn’t believe how strong Gohan had become. It was the moment he stepped out of Goku’s shadow. Gohan became the hero.
4. Legendary Super Saiyan (Dragon Ball Z: The Legendary Super Saiyan)
The Legendary Super Saiyan movie introduced Broly to viewers. In the movie, Broly transformed into something massive. Initially, Broly was in his Super Saiyan A-Type form and fought Goku. But down the road, Broly evolved into a Legendary Super Saiyan. His hair went green, and his muscles expanded.
This was not like Goku or Vegeta’s transformations. In this form, Broly was so powerful that he defeated Trunks, Piccolo, Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan simultaneously, leaving fans astonished by his massive and wild appearance. This transformation became a favorite among many Dragon Ball fans.
5. Super Saiyan 4 (Goku vs. Baby)
Dragon Ball GT brought a new look with Super Saiyan 4. Goku’s transformation came during his fight with Baby, one of the show’s biggest threats. Baby is from the Truffle race and can take control of people’s bodies. At a point in the story, he enters Vegeta and is dubbed Baby Vegeta. When Goku calmed down after raging in the Golden Great Ape form, he transformed into his ultimate form, Super Saiyan.
Unlike other Super Saiyan forms, this one gave Goku red fur, yellow eyes, and black hair. It looked wild and primal, and he also grew much stronger. Like any true Dragon Ball fight, Goku was playing around in the fight initially before focusing up and facing him properly. Fans didn’t expect this at all. Although GT is not part of the main story, Super Saiyan 4 became one of the most talked-about forms.
6. False Super Saiyan (Goku vs. Lord Slug)
Dragon Ball gave us a surprise in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, where Goku showed a strange form called False Super Saiyan. Goku tapped into a form later called False Super Saiyan during his fight with Lord Slug. Goku was losing badly, and his strength was fading fast. However, when his anger exploded, he suddenly gained a huge burst of power. His hair shot up, his eyes whitened, and he easily overpowered Slug.
This change is thought to be possible when a Saiyan has attained enough physical strength to turn into a Super Saiyan but not enough emotional turmoil to do so. At any rate, it was a power-up that was strong enough to literally turn the fight around in seconds. Unfortunately, it was short but meaningful.
7. Vegito (vs. Super Buu)
Dragon Ball gave fans a dream moment when Goku and Vegeta fused to become Vegito. This event took place while using the Potara earrings during their fight against Super Buu. Goku was losing to Super Buu, who had absorbed Gohan and others. He sensed Vegeta nearby and used Instant Transmission to get to him fast. After some convincing, they combine and become Vegito.
Vegito was stronger than either of them alone. He had Goku’s calm nature and appearance and Vegeta’s fire and ego. Vegito played around but still controlled the fight easily. He allowed himself to be absorbed so that he could save the other Z fighters who had been absorbed. Fans had always imagined what it would be like if they fought as one. Luckily, this transformation made that come true.
8. Vegeta going Super Saiyan (Androids Saga)
Everyone was stunned when Vegeta became a Super Saiyan for the first time. Android 19 mocked Vegeta, thinking he knew all his moves. Vegeta, however, revealed that the Androids’ data did not include those that fought in space. The ground split beneath Vegeta as he changed and let out a loud scream.
He trained alone in space in a place with gravity 450 times Earth’s normal level and was pushed to his limits. At one point, he lost all hope. He no longer cared about beating Goku or even staying alive. In that moment, when he let go of everything, the transformation finally happened. Vegeta became the warrior he had always wanted to be. The prince of all Saiyans was now a Super Saiyan too.
9. Vegeta turns Majin Vegeta (Babidi Saga)
Dragon Ball showed a darker side of Vegeta as Majin Vegeta. In a final attempt, Babidi resorted to magic to take control of Vegeta. He got inside Vegeta’s head and started turning him bad. The Supreme Kai Shin said that Vegeta struggles because his heart is impure. But Vegeta retorts that he is not innocent.
All of a sudden, red lightning starts coming out of Vegeta as he levitates. A stray lightning strike hits Gohan as he tries to approach Vegeta. The entire screen is shaking at this point, and the ground outside starts breaking. All of a sudden, Vegeta stops screaming, and an M symbol forms on his forehead. This transformation was shocking as it portrayed Vegeta in ways we had not seen for a while. Evil Vegeta was back.
10. Super Saiyan 3 (Goku vs. Kid Buu)
The battle against Kid Buu stands as one of the hardest in Dragon Ball. With his ability to recover from any hit and never run out of energy, Kid Buu seemed impossible to beat. Goku started the battle in Super Saiyan and powered up to Super Saiyan 2. He realized that even that much was not enough. He needed to find an entirely new level.
Fans were blown away by the transformation that followed. Goku’s hair extended to his back, and his roar cut through the night sky. The stone pillar upon which he was standing was smashed, and he appeared to be floating. It was a strong moment, and even Buu was unsure what was going to happen. Kid Buu, who looked bored before, suddenly seemed excited.
