After 10 years of waiting, we are finally getting Akatsuki no Yona season 2. Fans who watched the first season back in 2014 likely would have assumed they’d never be seeing their favorite red-haired princess on screen again. But here we are in late 2025, cheering on what many called an impossible miracle.

The announcement was made on the same day that the manga concluded its 16-year run of being serialized, December 19, 2025. And, frankly, when you really look at it, the timing is perfect. Now that the entire story is out, Studio Pierrot can make Akatsuki no Yona season 2 without fears of overtaking the manga or producing filler episodes.

What happened in season 1?

Season 1 covered the first 47 chapters of the manga, roughly eight volumes' worth of content. We watched Princess Yona transform from a sheltered royal into someone willing to fight for her kingdom. Her cousin Su-won murdered her father, King Il, forcing her to flee with her bodyguard Hak.

The season ended with Yona finding three of the four legendary dragon warriors. They are Kija, the White Dragon, Shin-ah, the Blue Dragon, and Jae-ha, the Green Dragon. Later, three OVAs released between 2015 and 2016 introduced the fourth warrior. His name is Zeno, the immortal Yellow Dragon. He once served the original Crimson Dragon King 2,000 years ago.

These OVAs filled in the missing story. Because of that, Akatsuki no Yona season 2 will not need to go over this part again.

The new season will probably pick up around chapter 48 of the manga. This is where things get really interesting. Yona and her crew, now complete with all four dragons plus Yoon and Hak, start getting involved in the kingdom's problems. They're not just wandering around anymore.

One major arc fans are dying to see animated is the introduction of An Riri. She's the daughter of the Water Tribe chief and becomes a crucial ally to Yona. The drug trafficking plotline on her turf reveals a more sinister side to Kouka that the sheltered princess didn't know about. It’s fierce, it’s emotional, and it contains some of the series’s best character development.

Akatsuki no Yona season 2 should also animate the Happy Hungry Bunch arc, as fans have nicknamed it. This is where Yona's group poses as a traveling performance troupe. Sounds lighthearted, right? Yet it tackles grave subjects like human trafficking and corruption. The arc demonstrates just beautifully how much Yona has developed since episode one.

How much content will the new season cover?

In Season 1, each episode adapted roughly two chapters. But with 229 chapters unfolding after season 1, that math would not work out for a reasonable length for multiple seasons. The majority of fans also feel that we will see things differently in Akatsuki no Yona season 2 by having a fast pace of not less than three chapters per episode.

Let's say the new season has 24-25 episodes like the first one, we can reach around chapter 120-126. That would include the Sei annexation arc and possibly end with the Five Tribe Council, where Su-won declares war on Kai. That's a solid stopping point that sets up major conflicts for future seasons.

Some viewers worry about rushing through content, but faster pacing doesn't automatically mean poor quality. The manga has some slower sections that could be tightened up for anime without losing important story beats. Plus, ending the manga means the studio knows exactly where the story is heading. They can plan accordingly.

What makes this announcement special

The news that Akatsuki no Yona season 2 was green-lit right after the manga finished might mean that we get a full adaptation of the story. Studios typically don’t order a sequel to a decade-old show unless they mean business. It is not common for shoujo anime to receive such treatment; this makes it even more thrilling.

The amount of community response has been impressive. Reddit threads were suddenly consumed with fans (probably well into their 20s) who’d been waiting since high school. Some never lost hope. Others had completely given up and moved on. But everyone is happy that they waited.

Conclusion

There is no release date yet. But we can look to late 2026 or early 2027. Production takes time, though, particularly if they wish to replicate or exceed the quality of the show’s first season. And after waiting for ten years, a few more months won’t kill us. Probably.

Akatsuki no Yona season 2 is more than just one of the most anticipated anime sequels. It’s evidence that every now and then, fans do get what they want. The tale of a princess who loses everything and fights to get it back is finally being adapted the way it should.
