Devils in the Black Clover series are the embodiment of chaos—twisted, powerful beings from the underworld who thrive on manipulation and destruction. Their presence always signals disaster, and their goals often involve plunging the human world into ruin. Among these malevolent entities, one made his first full appearance with particular dread: Zagred.

Zagred orchestrated the Elf Massacre, manipulated reincarnation magic from the shadows, and became the first elite devil in ages to cross into the human realm. Wielding Kotodama Magic, or Word Soul Magic, he can twist reality simply by speaking. His true form features black wings, horns, clawed hands, and multiple mouths that can open throughout his body.

By claiming Patolli’s five-leaf clover grimoire, Zagred unlocked the power to call forth underworld beasts that drained both magic and life from their victims. In a shocking revelation, we learned that Zagred manipulated events to frame Prince Lemiel Silvamillion Clover for the massacre of the elves. He used a magic tool to absorb their mana while slaughtering them with an imitation of Lemiel’s Light Magic.

His supreme goal in Black Clover was to manifest physically by disintegrating Licht’s four-leaf clover grimoire into a five-leaf one, allowing him to own Licht’s body. This act not only boosted the animosity between races but also set the stage for future conflicts.

When Licht transformed himself into a demon to prevent Zagred from possessing his body, Zagred was eventually sealed away by Secre Swallowtail. However, before the seal was complete, he managed to orchestrate the future reincarnation of the elves.

Zagred’s Role in the Shadow Palace Arc of Black Clover

Zagred’s true significance in Black Clover came to light during the Shadow Palace arc. After secretly controlling Patolli and the Eye of the Midnight Sun for years, he finally took action. When the Shadow Palace opened, Zagred began possessing people, including Ronne. He did this to collect the last magic stone needed to bring his real body from the underworld.

Inside the palace, Zagred told Patolli the truth about how he had been tricked. This broke Patolli’s spirit and pushed him into despair. Zagred enjoyed causing pain and suffering. He mocked Patolli and proudly shared his plans, thinking no one could defeat him.

The final battle against Zagred brought together unexpected allies in Black Clover. Asta, Yuno, Licht, Lemiel, Secre, Yami, and Charla teamed up to fight him inside the collapsing Shadow Palace. Zagred was incredibly strong and could heal from deadly attacks, but the teamwork of these fighters slowly turned the tide.

Asta’s Anti-Magic in Black Clover was a key weapon in the fight. It could cancel out Zagred’s powerful devil magic. The turning point came when Yami used his Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Equinox to cut Zagred in half. This gave Asta the opening he needed to strike with his massive Black Divider and destroy Zagred’s heart, ending the battle for good.

Zagred was shown as a major threat during the Shadow Palace arc. His power and influence made him one of the scariest enemies at the time. However, later arcs introduced even stronger devils. Supreme Devils like Lilith and Naamah proved to be on a much higher level than Zagred. But there are still some controversies regarding how powerful he is in the devil ranking.

In the end, Zagred in Black Clover emerged as the most defining villain in the early stages of the series. His cunning, power, and malevolence gave the Magic Knights a tough battle as the first major devil. His defeat marked a significant milestone in major characters’ growth, preparing them for the even greater challenges they would face in the future.
