Bleach’s protagonist, Ichigo Kurosaki, is a character with a connection to every race in the series. His heritage is key to the narrative, giving him the necessary power boosts while also contributing to major plot twists. Due to this, it is crucial to know about Ichigo’s parents, whose ties to the protagonist are part of the larger lore and also serve to motivate him.

Ichigo’s parents are Masaki Kurosaki and Isshin Shiba, who goes on to take the name Isshin Kurosaki. His mother is a rare pureblooded Quincy, while his father is an accomplished Soul Reaper Captain.

However, the details regarding their history and relationship were not revealed till the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. Both Ichigo and the fans finally discovered the heartwarming yet tragic bond between his parents during the protagonist’s training with Squad Zero.

Isshin Shiba was once the captain of the 10th division of the Gotei 13, known for being powerful and fun-loving. Approximately two decades before the events of Bleach, he had gone to the human world to investigate missing Soul Reapers and unusual Hollow activity. There, he encountered the Hollow White, a creature distinctly different from other Hollows.

During an intense battle against it, however, the Hollow’s creator, Aizen, snuck up behind Isshin and cut him. The injury forced him to go on the defensive, leaving him at a disadvantage. Right when the Hollow was prepared to deal a devastating Cero to Isshin, however, an unknown person intervened and saved him.

This was Masaki Kurosaki, the last descendant of the Kurosaki family. The young girl had been adopted by the Ishida family to marry Ryuken and keep the Quincy bloodline pure. Despite facing a restrictive lifestyle, however, Masaki’s free-spirited and confident nature could not be tied down by anyone. Due to this, when she heard the nearby Isshin in trouble, she rushed to his aid, in spite of Ryuken’s attempts to stop her.

When Masaki jumped into battle, she allowed the Hollow to bite her before killing it from close range. Right after, the Hollow began self-destructing, but Isshin stepped in to save Masaki. Hence, both Isshin and Masaki helped each other in their first meeting. They instantly took a liking to each other despite the tensions between their races.

Unfortunately, difficulties soon arose when Masaki began turning into a Hollow due to White’s essence. Both Isshin and Ryuken were unsure what to do, but Urahara stepped in and offered a solution. He explained that by binding Isshin’s soul with hers, his Soul Reaper powers could oppose the Hollow.

Though this meant that Isshin would give up his identity as a resident of Soul Society, he instantly accepted and saved Masaki. Following this, Isshin was left in the human world and opened a clinic, while Masaki completed her studies. The two gradually got closer and married each other. Isshin gave up the Shiba surname and became Isshin Kurosaki. They went on to have three children - Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu.

Masaki’s tragic fate in Bleach

Despite having spent several years together in harmony, Isshin and Masaki did not get a completely happy ending. When Ichigo was 9 years old in Bleach, he was lured by the Hollow Grand Fisher. Masaki, sensing the danger, went after him. However, when the stakes were at their highest, she was struck by Yhwach’s Auswahlen and lost her powers.

This left her helpless in front of Grand Fisher, causing her eventual death. While Ichigo survived, he ended up maturing significantly from this event. Masaki’s death greatly impacted her family, though no one blamed Ichigo. Isshin had held himself responsible for not protecting his wife and continued loving her ever since.

This is shown through the large memorial portrait that Isshin has of Masaki and his continued conversations with her picture. Isshin eventually regained his Soul Reaper powers and got his revenge against Grand Fisher in Bleach’s Arrancar Arc.

In addition to the emotional depth of Ichigo's parents’ relationship, their story also led to two key revelations in Bleach. The first was Aizen’s role in creating the Hollow White, which ultimately caused Masaki and Isshin to meet. The second was Yhwach’s hand in Masaki’s death, adding several layers of intensity to Ichigo’s battle against the Quincy King.
