The Boruto manga series is slowly approaching its conclusion. Kawaki was finally put in the spotlight in the recent chapter. Based on how the previous chapter concluded, it was clear that the upcoming chapter would focus on him once again. This made fans revisit some of the older chapters of the Two Blue Vortex manga. Netizens browsed through some of the older chapters and came to a realization.
Kawaki’s internal struggles were quite evident early on in the series. Before the three-year time skip, Kawaki caused a massive ordeal for the series' protagonist. It was clear that he wanted to kill Boruto in an attempt to save Naruto and the rest of the village. Momoshiki was the biggest threat to their security, and Kawaki saw no other solution. That’s when he decided to pay Naruto and Hinata a visit and revealed his plan.
Naruto and Hinata’s reaction forced Kawaki to seal them in a different dimension where time doesn’t flow. Now, Kawaki was a fugitive since the village believed that he was responsible for Naruto and Hinata’s deaths. At that point, he leveraged Eida’s potential romantic feelings for him and asked her for help. Eida used her Shinjutsu, specifically the Omnipotence, to quite literally alter reality. This flipped Kawaki and Boruto's places, making the latter a fugitive.
Kawaki had a tough childhood and nearly died from becoming Isshiki's vessel. His father gave him away for money. He had no reason to live until Naruto welcomed him to Konohagakure. He looked after him like his own son, which is also why Kawaki intends to save Naruto and the rest of the village.

However, his antics towards the end of the Naruto Next Generations iteration gave rise to plenty of internal struggles. His clothes were ragged, and he didn’t seem to care about his appearance. His hair was unkempt, and his clothes were shabby, to say the least.
This could have been the result of his relationship with Naruto and Boruto turning sour. For three years, he had to live with the fact that the one person who looked after him would never acknowledge him ever again. Furthermore, the one person whom he considered his comrade was also his biggest nemesis.
Will Kawaki’s struggles come to an end in the Boruto series?
It is nearly impossible to answer this question at this moment in time. However, it doesn’t seem like Kawaki’s problems will disappear anytime soon. He and Boruto are on the same team, as they try to dismantle the Shinju by defeating Jura. However, the team-up could be quite temporary. As it stands, Momoshiki resides within the protagonist and is therefore a threat to Konohagakure.
Fans are waiting to see how things will pan out after the fight against Jura. That being said, Kawaki and Boruto will most likely fight to the death. This scenario can be avoided if the protagonist can figure out a way to neutralize Momoshiki as a threat, as the latter continues to have control over the former’s body. As things stand, it seems unlikely that Kawaki’s struggles will come to an end anytime soon.
Kawaki’s character design was a subtle way of showcasing his internal struggles. The writers and illustrators often work in tandem to leave small details in the character design for readers to decipher. Masashi Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto wished to highlight the weight on Kawaki’s shoulders during the three-year time skip featured in the manga. Fans are also eager to see how his character will progress as the story advances.
