To understand who Isshiki Otsuki in Boruto is, we need to understand how the franchise's vast narrative has evolved from being a story of a boy who wants to be Hokage to interdimensional threats from ancient, godlike beings.

He is not just a simple villain who posed a threat to the world. Isshiki Otsutsuki is one of the major antagonists of the series and a member of the Otsutsuki Clan.

As he was part of the main family of the Otsutsuki clan, their goal was to travel through dimensions to find planets to sacrifice and cultivate Chakra Fruits. They are not really divine beings but rather aliens who have gained the status of gods because of their enhanced powers.

They have one goal in life: they arrive on a planet, plant a God Tree by feeding it a living Otsutsuki sacrifice, allow the tree to absorb all life, and consume the resulting fruit to enhance their powers and lifespan.

Isshiki Otsutsuki was paired up with Kaguya, but for unknown reasons, she left him with no explanation, and he was all by himself, critically injured. This act of betrayal started the butterfly effect that led to the start of his character arc.

Furthermore, to save himself from dying, Isshiki shrank himself and entered the body of a human monk named Jigen. Then he slowly started taking over his body and mind, and was successful in overwriting his identity.

However, Jigen was not a suitable vessel, and he would need to find a replacement. Someone capable of withstanding his full powers.

With a fixed goal in his mind, he set out on a journey to find a more compatible host, one genetically altered and cultivated to be a perfect vessel. After taking countless innocent lives, he finally found someone who could help him achieve his goal, and it was Kawaki.

For him to resurrect, Isshiki has to use a method that is prominent in their clan, known as the Karma Seal. When a member of their clan is about to die, they can easily implant their life data onto a host with Karma.

In simpler words, it is like creating a backup, which will ensure that their information is stored in a person who will help them reincarnate. Over time, this data takes over the vessel's original biology, and the host will cease to exist.

Even without a strong host body, Isshiki was incredibly powerful. His abilities made him almost invincible. He can shrink himself and any non-living object instantly, regardless of size, and also reverse this according to his will. It is efficient in combat as his weapons go undetected.

Additionally, with having Immense Chakra and Physical Power, Isshiki also has Dojutsu and Daikokuten.

For most of the first part of Boruto, he was nearly untouchable. But unfortunately, during his fight with Naruto, Sasuke, Kawaki, and Boruto, his fate completely changed.

His story reaches the climax during the massive battle between Naruto, Boruto, Sasuke, and Kawaki. To defeat him, Naruto uses his trump card called Baryon Mode, which was highly effective as it weakened Isshiki by shortening his lifespan. Although the cost of using his mode was high because Kurama lost his life.

Even after Isshiki lost Jigen as his vessel, he tried to imprint Karma on Kawaki to try and reincarnate again. However, he was tricked by Kawaki and Boruto with a shadow clone jutsu and exploited the last seconds of his shortened lifespan. With no time or viable vessel left, Isshiki dies, crumbling into dust.

In conclusion, Ishhiki Otsutsuki in Boruto is a major villain who wants to seek immortality and has the goal of harvesting the chakra fruit by taking over the planet.

He is the reason why this series shifts from being a ninja-centered narrative to a cosmic mythos. Furthermore, he represents a fully realized god, more than Kaguya or Momoshiki could. And finally, because of him, the series was able to introduce concepts of Karma.
