One of the most central characters in mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man series is the Control Devil, regardless of which reincarnation is discussed. Both Control Devil Makima and Control Devil Nayuta play very important, albeit very different, roles in the series. Another commonality between them exists in their powers and abilities, which are very similar.

Essentially, the only difference in their abilities is how developed they are or which powers each specifically shows. For example, Nayuta is able to control people with her chain link ability like Makima. However, unlike Makima, she’s only able to fire three chains at a time. There are also some whom she’s unable to control, such as those loyal to or once controlled by Makima.

Beyond this, however, Chainsaw Man has shown the two’s powers and abilities to be one and the same. Before diving into the Control Devil’s unique abilities, they also benefit from the standard Devil abilities. This includes the ability to make contracts with humans, such as Makima’s with the Japanese government, and having their power increased by human fear.

In the Control Devil’s case, this would obviously be the fear of control. Likewise, this being such a major fear of humanity makes the Control Devil one of the series’ most powerful. They likewise possess immense strength and the unique title of one of the Four Horsemen Devils. This is significant, as the four are said to be some of the strongest Devils in existence.

Makima was also shown to be highly intelligent and a hand-to-hand combat expert. However, it can be presumed that Nayuta could’ve risen to the same level in these areas were it not for her premature death in Chainsaw Man Part 2. The Control Devil has also been shown to exhibit an enhanced sense of smell, both as Makima and Nayuta.

The Control Devil’s unique abilities in Chainsaw Man, explained

The most obvious and intuitive ability of the Control Devil is to control others as the embodiment of the fear of control or conquest/domination. The Control Devil can directly control those they view as beneath them, removing all of their autonomy. This works on humans, animals, Devils, Fiends, and Hybrids, implying that there is no limit to what the Control Devil can “brainwash.”

The Control Devil can also manipulate the memories and perceptions of those they control and “brainwash” in Chainsaw Man. Once the target is under the Control Devil’s command, they’re unable to remember anything that happened immediately before or during this time. These memories can also be locked away semi-permanently, as seen in both story parts.

The Control Devil has also been shown to use Force Manipulation in various applications. One of the most infamous is when Makima used human sacrifices to target enemies from a long range and crush them to death. She can also use a “Bang” attack, which sees her expel a force from her index finger. This ability can also be applied to weapons like swords in short range.

In summation

In Chainsaw Man, the primary ability of both incarnations of the Control Devil is to take control of a specific target or targets. Upon doing so, they can command the target(s) in any way they see fit, as they’re unable to refuse or disobey. The target(s) in question also lose their memories of being controlled and the time immediately preceding it, which can be locked away.

The Control Devil also has the ability of Force Manipulation, which can be used in varying capacities. The Control Devil has also been shown to have high intelligence and proficient combat prowess, as well as an enhanced sense of smell. Beyond this, they obviously possess the standard Devil abilities, such as being able to make contracts.
