While Demon Slayer is primarily a tale filled with action, drama, and comedy, it also features subtle romantic developments between characters. Fans have witnessed the gradual growth of relationships such as those between Mitsuri and Obanai, and Tanjiro and Kanao.
Due to this, a natural question that arises is whether Nezuko Kamado, one of the main characters in the series, has a love interest. Viewers who are looking forward to Nezuko having a romantic interest have plenty of reason to rejoice, as she does have a significant other by the end of Demon Slayer. This is none other than Tanjiro’s close friend, Zenitsu.
Zenitsu and Nezuko’s relationship has been a highlight ever since the beginning of Demon Slayer. The Thunder Breathing user, though often cowardly, showcases his might and bravery when it comes to women he finds beautiful. Fans got firsthand experience of this when Nezuko finally went out of her box and Zenitsu met her.

Despite knowing Nezuko is a demon, Zenitsu fell in love at first sight. He began following her around in an attempt to woo her, resulting in the hilarious scene where she ran away from him. What began as a lighthearted bond with the lovestruck Zenitsu hopelessly chasing after Nezuko soon became something more.
Nezuko, though initially not receptive to Zenitsu’s bold confessions of love, gradually began warming up to him. She welcomed his conversations during the Rehabilitation Training, where he would pour his heart out to her box. In a valiant act of heroism, Nezuko was also saved by Zenitsu against Enmu during the Mugen Train Arc. Following the demon’s defeat, she fell asleep in his arms, indicating how she had grown to trust him.
During the Sunrise Countdown Arc, Nezuko was struggling to resist Muzan’s control over her as a demon. At this point, she remembered the good things in her life, which included a bright picture of Zenitsu holding flowers. This helped her come out on top while giving fans a glimpse into her perspective toward Zenitsu.
Demon Slayer never properly shows Nezuko and Zenitsu getting together, despite the cute moments they share. Their last appearance in the series saw Zenitsu, Nezuko, Tanjiro, and Inosuke living together in the Kamado family home. However, fans could infer that the pair ended up getting married due to the series' conclusion.
The final chapter of the manga took the story several years into the future, displaying a new world not threatened by demons. It introduced Yoshiteru Agatsuma and Toko Agatsuma, Zenitsu and Nezuko’s great-grandchildren. Toko’s traits were a perfect resemblance to Nezuko’s while Yoshiteru was just like Zenitsu.
The Controversy Surrounding Nezuko and Zenitsu’s Relationship in Demon Slayer

While there are plenty of Nezuko and Zenitsu “shippers” in the fandom, there is also another side that criticizes their relationship. This is mainly because of the lack of romantic development between Nezuko and Zenitsu. While Nezuko did grow to see Zenitsu as a friend, there were no hints that she saw him as anything more.
Rather, Zenitsu was always the one who one-sidedly loved Nezuko, though constantly getting turned down. Due to this, the decision to make the pair end up together seemed like a forced choice to have a romantic ending. Shonen anime has been notorious for its belief that a happy ending cannot be achieved without a marriage or some kind of romance between characters, and a part of the fandom believes Nezuko and Zenitsu to be a victims of the same.
Nevertheless, the development between Nezuko and Zenitsu led to several memorable and heartwarming moments. While the presence of love between the two remains a topic of debate, they had a positive influence on each other, contributing to their growth in both personality and strength.
