Does Kafka lose his powers? The ending of Kaiju No. 8 manga, explained

The Kaiju No. 8 manga officially ended on July 18, 2025, concluding its tumultuous run with chapter 129 and bringing the divisive Last Wave Arc to a close. The final chapter is set four months after the battle against the Meireki Era Mega Monster, where the Defense Force emerged victorious and Kafka’s life was saved by Isao Shinomiya’s spirit.

The protagonist woke up in the hospital, finding that countless civilians and troops had died due to the monster attacks, with expenses going up to 564 billion dollars. No, Kafka Hibino does not lose his powers at the end of Kaiju No. 8. The mysterious larvae and vengeful spirits within him decided to stay, allowing him to transform into his humanoid form at the end of the series to protect civilians.

According to him, he may have retained his powers either because Isao Shinomiya commanded the spirits to stay back and help protect the country or simply because the ancestral entities decided to lend their strength for the next generation.

Sadly, the final chapter of Kaiju No. 8 did not provide any resolution to Mina and Kafka’s relationship. After Kafka woke up and was greeted by Mina, she appeared to want to tell him something, but held herself back, after which they headed to Tachikawa Base.

While there, Mina joined the others in welcoming Kafka back and got busy with her duties later. Hence, while they continue to be good friends, Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro do not get together romantically during the manga.
