Witch Watch is a romantic comedy show about Morihito Otogi and Nico Wakatsuki. From the time the series began and Nico was sent to Morihito’s home to live with him, it was clear as day that their relationship was going to be the classic “childhood friends to potential lovers” trope. Although it felt like Nico was the only one who saw him as her romantic interest.
However, as the story progressed, there were subtle hints from Morihito’s side that maybe he, too, has similar feelings towards her, but something was stopping him from acting on them. Because they have not explicitly opened up to each other, and Morihito always dismisses showing any emotions, fans have been wondering if he’s actually in love with her.
Nico and Morihito were close as children before being separated for several years. When they finally reunite, it’s under extraordinary circumstances. Nico, now a teenage witch, needs a bodyguard familiar, and Morihito, a trained ogre with immense physical prowess, is appointed to fill that role.
It is obvious that she loves him because Nico wears her emotions on her sleeve, but Morihito, on the other hand, is very stoic towards her. He is shown to constantly be her overprotective guardian who is focused on the duty assigned to him.

Although as they kept on spending more time with each other, there were small cracks in his behaviour that indicated that he too loves her, he is just too dense to understand the emotion. It is because he is emotionally repressed.
Morihito’s personality is deeply rooted in personal philosophy and responsibility. He is an ogre and has been trained throughout his life to be strong and take his duties with utmost importance. Being Nico’s familiar isn’t just a magical contract; it’s a responsibility he bears with honor. To him, mixing those responsibilities with romantic emotions could cloud his judgment or put Nico at risk.
This is why, for the longest time, he kept his feelings locked and did not allow them to get out of hand. The only way anyone can make out that he, too, has feelings for her is how overprotective he gets towards her.
If Morihito truly saw Nico only as a responsibility, he wouldn’t react with such emotional urgency. His protective instincts are rooted in love, not obligation. Finally, the biggest clue we get that confirms his romantic feelings towards her is how competitive he gets when someone else tries to be a better bodyguard for her.
Will they end up as a couple in Witch Watch?
Fans have been invested in watching their relationship develop for a long time, but unlike other romantic comedy shows, Witch Watch is not making these characters fall in love overnight or are pushed together by external forces, and lets their bond develop organically.
Looking at how the story is paced, it might take some time, but they will definitely become a couple in Witch Watch. Kenta Shinohara, the creator of this story, has shown a mastery of pacing and emotional buildup in this series, and it’s very likely that the confession, when it happens, will come at a key turning point in the plot, perhaps after a major emotional or magical climax. And fans will be ready for it.
In conclusion, Morihito does love Nico in Witch Watch. His love is quiet, respectful, and deeply rooted in their shared history. He doesn’t need magic to show it, he just needs time to admit it, both to Nico and to himself. And that’s what makes Witch Watch such a special series. It doesn’t rush the love story. It lets it grow, and when it finally blossoms, it’s going to be unforgettable.
