The story of the Dusk Beyond the End of the World anime follows Akira Himegami, a high school boy who wakes up 200 years in the future after being put into cryogenic sleep. The world he finds is completely changed. Nations have collapsed, society is led by an organization called OWEL, and traditional marriage has been replaced by a system known as “Elsie” or LC.

Akira’s life gets weirder when he meets Yugure, an android who looks exactly like his girlfriend Towasa. Surprisingly, Yugure instantly proposes marriage. Together they set out on a journey that is full of mysteries, dangers, and questions about love.

The Team behind the Dusk Beyond the End of the World anime

The Dusk Beyond the End of the World anime introduces several important characters. Shuuichirou Umeda (Koichi Haimawari from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes) voices Himegami Akira. Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan) plays Yugure, and Ai Kayano (Sylphiette from Jobless Reincarnation) takes on the role of Towasa. Miyu Tomita (Riko from Made in Abyss) joins the cast as Amoru, a girl searching for a banned picture book written by her parents.

Beyond the core cast, the Dusk Beyond the End of the World anime adds more faces with each reveal. New characters include Edie (Ayaki Kohari), Calcram (Yasuto Saka), Fides (Ami Koshimizu), Haniyama (Maki Kawase), Hydrangea (Haruka Shiraishi), Vale (Toru Inada), and Casta (Rina Sato). Another set includes Yoiyami (Miyuki Sawajo), Hakubo (Tomori Kusunoki), Oboro (Tomoyuki Morikawa), and Yokrata (Yohei Azakami). These characters highlight how big and diverse the world will be, with everything from mafia battles to OWEL officers shaping Akira’s journey.

The music in Dusk Beyond the End of the World is just as important as the story. The opening theme, Platform, is performed by Uru, who said the song was written with the idea of exploring forms of love in a changing world. The ending theme, Two Of Us, is sung by Hana Hope, who described it as a song meant to connect with people who sometimes feel out of place in a world that tells them what is “right.” Both songs are tied closely to the anime’s themes of the connection between humans and robots.

Behind the scenes, the Dusk Beyond the End of the World anime has an impressive team. The original concept comes from Project FT. Naokatsu Tsuda, known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and The Darwin Incident, is directing while also handling the series composition. Character designs were created by manga artist Midori Tayama and adapted for animation by Yoshiko Saitou, who worked on Jobless Reincarnation. The music is composed by Masahiro Tokuda, known for Deca-Dence and Ishura.
