Hana-Kimi Episode 1 immediately places Mizuki in a boys-only school where, if she is careless, she runs the risk of being "outed". Mizuki enters the school disguised as someone else, with the hopes of getting closer to Sano Izumi, a high jumper she admires. The first episode introduces the viewer to her dangerous quest to hide her true identity from everyone at the school.
The reflection staring back shows a boy, but the truth remains hidden beneath the surface. This drastic change marks the beginning of an elaborate masquerade that could crumble at any moment.
A Girl's Bold Decision in Hana-Kimi Episode 1

The premiere opens with Mizuki successfully convincing her parents to let her transfer to the prestigious Japanese institution. She's committed completely to this new life by cutting off all of her long hair so that she can look like a boy. This is when things start to get interesting, as Mizuki's new life has the potential for both good and bad outcomes.
Mizuki Ashiya is starting her first day as a transfer student today and running to class in a nervous rush. While in this crazy morning, Mizuki bumps into Sano Izumi, who picks up her bag when it falls to the ground. Mizuki doesn't hesitate to go up to Sano and tell him that she wants to be friends with him.
New Friendships and Challenges of Ayashi Mizuki

Mizuki meets Nakatsu Shuichi, an easy-going dude who’s a member of the soccer team, and Nakatsu gives Mizuki a little background on Sano’s weird behaviour (it’s just him sulking), and Nakatsu’s a good guy and has already become Mizuki’s first friend here in Hana-Kimi Episode 1.
Once the students finished their classes, Nakatsu offered to take Mizuki on a tour of the dormitories. The two chat about how dorm assignments are determined for the three different buildings based on the scholarship status of the students in residence.
When they arrive at the dorm, Mizuki is surprised when she learns she will be sharing a room with Sano. Out of nowhere, Kayashima (Nakatsu's weird roommate) pops up behind them and scares them half to death.
Yujiro, a dog, shows his affection for Mizuki almost immediately by jumping on her energetically. This surprises Nakatsu since usually Yujiro only exhibits this type of behavior with females. He jokingly states that if Mizuki were to say she was a girl, he would assume she was one based on how she looks.
Athletic Prowess Revealed in Hana-Kimi Episode 1

The Hana-Kimi Episode 1 showcased Mizuki's incredible running skills through the Sprint event. Sekime and another witness couldn't believe how fast Mizuki was. Mizuki didn't just win; she broke the school's 100-meter sprint record.
This causes a mad rush to recruit her into sports. The soccer captain was first in her pursuit to get Mizuki to play striker, quickly followed by the rugby, track & field, and baseball captains, all trying to get her to join their teams. Mizuki escaped again using her running ability.
While trying to escape the captains, Mizuki also found Sano sleeping under a tree again. She got really close to Sano and was ready to kiss him, but there was a noise that startled them. When Sano woke up, he noticed Mizuki hiding in the bushes.
The Soccer Challenge
Nakatsu later challenges Mizuki to a soccer duel, which she accepts as the honorable action for any young man. During their match, Nakatsu accidentally knocks her unconscious. Sano arrives with Yujiro and instructs Nakatsu to fetch Dr. Umeda while he carries Mizuki to the infirmary.
Upon entering the infirmary, Nakatsu is relieved to find out that Mizuki only sustained a minor concussion. Once Mizuki comes back to consciousness, Dr. Umeda kicks Nakatsu out of the room as quickly as possible before there can be any problems. Sano leaves the room along with Nakatsu.
Mizuki's about to take off when the good Dr. Umeda stops her. He asks her, What's a girl like you doing at our school? That's how Hana-Kimi Episode 1 ends on a dramatic note.
Review of Hana-Kimi Episode 1
This premiere was surprisingly engaging despite having no prior knowledge of the source material. The gender-bending premise immediately caught my attention and kept me invested throughout.
The pacing in the first episode was just right for setting up who the main characters are and where they live. The way that they presented each of the supporting characters was also nice because they didn't just throw a bunch of info at the viewer and expect them to remember it all at once.
The greatest thing about Mizuki's character is her lack of drama or incompetence. Her situation is so dangerous; however, her determination is believable as opposed to being forced. The comedic moments were well-utilized, too.
All in all, Hana-Kimi Episode 1 serves as a good start for the series, as it clearly establishes the premise. It also introduces likable characters who still have room to grow, and leaves us with a big cliffhanger to keep watching.
