Hunter x Hunter: What is Nanika?

Hunter x Hunter’s expansive world features a variety of intriguing and enigmatic entities, and Nanika stands at the very top of the list. Introduced during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc, it played a crucial role through its emotional bond with the Zoldyck family, stunning both fans and characters with its abilities.

Nanika is a creature from the Dark Continent who resides within Alluka Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter. The circumstances surrounding her possession of the girl remain a mystery, but the two of them share a body and consider each other to be distinctive individuals. While Alluka was isolated from the rest of her family due to her possession of Nanika, she never held it against the entity. Nanika, for its part, also treasures Alluka.

Its personality is much like that of a child, where it enjoys being praised and is quick to break down into tears when scolded. Nanika cares a lot about Killua, which is why the deuteragonist is the only one capable of controlling her properly.

As mentioned, Nanika’s first proper appearance came immediately after Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant Arc, during the Hunter Chairman Election. While the Hunter world was in chaos over its politics, the protagonist, Gon, lay at the edge of death due to the consequences of using Limitation Transformation.

Desperate to save his friend, Killua approached Alluka, intending to use Nanika’s powers. While he initially met with his cute sister, after fulfilling her requests, the Dark Continent creature Nanika appeared with its pitch black mouth and eyes.

Threatening to kill his mother should the Zoldyck family prevent Killua’s goal of carrying Alluka to Gon, he set off on a turbulent adventure with his sister. Despite being threatened by Illumi and various other opponents along the way, Killua’s passion towards saving Gon shone through, allowing Alluka to eventually reach the protagonist.

Finally, Killua told Nanika to save Gon, causing him to finally come out of his coma. Having saved his friend, Killua then ordered Nanika not to appear out of Alluka due to the dangerous enemies aiming for them. While the tearful Dark Continent creature agreed, Alluka began scolding her brother for not showing the same amount of care to the other part of her body.

Killua, who realized he was still involuntarily being controlled by his lineage, corrected himself and apologized to Nanika immediately. He resolved to protect both forms of his sister and ensure their powers were never exploited again.

How powerful is Nanika in Hunter x Hunter?

It is no overstatement to say that Nanika is one of the strongest beings in Hunter x Hunter, though its powers cannot be measured in a traditional sense. Nanika’s special skill is known as Wish Granting, which is connected to her link with Alluka.

When someone fulfills three of Alluka’s requests, Nanika pops out of the body. It then grants any wish requested of it. However, Alluka’s next three requests will be much harder, depending on how great the wish is granted. If Alluka’s requests are denied four times in a row, the person and their most loved one will end up dying.

This scale of casualties can also increase depending on the last wish granted. After the death of the request recipient, Alluka’s requests are brought back to the first level of difficulty. Through the use of her ability, Nanika could kill 67 people in an instant and also save Gon, who seemed destined to die.

Additionally, due to Killua’s special connection with Nanika and Alluka, he can make commands to the two of them. This allows him to skip all other conditions and have his wish fulfilled. As a result, Nanika has one of the most broken skills in Hunter x Hunter, with seemingly no limit.

However, this ability cannot be applied in battle by itself and needs a host who can activate Wish Granting. Nevertheless, while Nanika may be beatable in a fight against a smart opponent, she is an unbelievably powerful individual who captivated every fan and sparked widespread curiosity about the Dark Continent.
