Is Black Clover Worth Watching?

Black Clover, one of the many shōnen anime, has been airing since 2017. With a range of shōnen anime around, fans try to keep an eye out for complex, yet engaging narratives with an emotional storyline, excitement, and a compelling setting all packed into one.

A common characteristic among these series is an unfavoured hero, powerful institutions, and emotional circumstances that end up sticking with the viewer over the years. To not go under the radar, the genre warrants narratives that balance old as well as new ideas.

Many discussions about shōnen anime have included Black Clover, which has been running on TV and in manga from 2017 to this day. It even has a film! Although initially dubbed as ordinary, Black Clover has garnered a strong fan base given its unique story and emotional impact, which definitely makes it worth a watch.

Even though a handful of viewers decided to drop Black Clover within the first few episodes, the narrative improved pretty soon. All the credit goes to the nonstop action, ensemble of multiple stories, and a believable magic system, which makes it one of the best and most reliable modern shonen series. Black Clover doesn’t try to do anything new, but it creates a more powerful and meaningful outcome as it moves along.

Black Clover is about a boy named Asta who is born without magic in a society where magic power decides everything. Nevertheless, he aspires to be the Wizard King, the most powerful mage of the Clover Kingdom. Together with his friend and rival Yuno, who is a prodigy with enormous magical powers, Asta fights strong adversaries and experiences dark secrets. Focusing on serious battles, character development, and the concepts of friendship and perseverance, the story manages to offer a typical yet still emotionally appealing shōnen adventure.

As the hero is loud and the intro is familiar, the first episodes might initially feel unremarkable. The show became successful mostly because of the way it is put together. It follows the simultaneous rise of one major hero with the growth of many characters in other magic squads. Better animation and thoughtful battle scenes follow after the show’s early episodes. It has original fighting mechanics and colossal magical elements, presenting viewers with different ways to fight and think.

Besides, the anime's main emotional theme is shaped through ideas of staying strong, camaraderie, and appreciating one’s worth. Everyone on the team gets their spot to shine, which transforms the journey from solo to collective. In addition, it is not accurate to think of villains as being simple in this series. A lot of them emerge from historical events, social and political differences, and a yearning for revenge from people without high social status. As a result, the drama in the tale becomes complex and nuanced than the usual battle between good and evil.

It is well known that Studio Pierrot's animation is simply excellent. Due to budget constraints, the initial story arcs might feel a bit lacking, but as the series progressed, the subsequent storylines and especially those in Eye of the Midnight Sun and Elf Reincarnation had quality battle scenes and impressive animation. Studio Pierrot was able to impress everyone with its amazing work in hefty battle sequences and character development. Notably, each theme in the show brings more vitality and impact to the key emotional points in the story.

Black Clover Manga’s Conclusion and Anime’s Future

Last year, in 2021, the Black Clover anime completed episode 170, which finished the Spade Kingdom arc. Recently, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King was released to tell a new story that linked the end of the anime to what might come next. The anime skipped the final chapters of the manga, so we are still unaware of how the Clover Kingdom meets Lucius Zogratis and the future of the characters.

The manga by Yūki Tabata, Black Clover, is now beginning its last story arc, reaching its end for sure. As the series draws to a close, the last chapters focus on larger risks and the important changes within several leading characters. We don’t have an official new arc yet, but what we’ve seen lately suggests that Tabata might be working on wrapping up both the plot and the main themes in the series.

Those who like Black Clover can hope for future episodes to be on the way. Because the manga and movie are still so popular, we can expect another season focusing on the last arc, despite there not having been an official announcement yet.

In other words, Black Clover stands out not for creating a new genre, but by making the shōnen genre even better. Although at first, it might paint a familiar portrayal, soon it jumps right into unfamiliar but heartfelt development full of character, serious themes, and exciting magic-related action.
