In the recent chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Gege Akutami has delivered an emotional twist that was expected by fans, but no one was able to figure out who the target was going to be. Cross in this story has been shot in the middle of an intense situation due to a misunderstanding, and now his life is hanging in the balance. But even after reading the events that conspired in Jujustu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 13, fandom is torn between one important question: Is Cross alive or dead?

The short answer would be that his character is fighting against being alive or dead. His injuries are critical to the point that they cannot be reversed by anyone. Now, the reason why Gege chose this character to be in a critical condition is that he is one of the emotional pillars of this narrative. He was a dispatch officer from the Simurians' side and a twin brother of Maru. Till now, his presence was to represent the ideological conflict at the center of the series.
Cross was the opposite of Maru, who is known to be optimistic and carefree. In this story, he carried deep cynicism that became part of his core personality. Yet despite these character flaws, he managed to have a bond with Tsurugi and Yuka and wanted to warm up with them.
In an important moment that shocked fans, Cross even ended up voting for coexistence. Just as he begins to change, tragedy strikes like a storm in his life in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. It is classic of Gege Akutami to make readers feel for a character, and then, when things feel comfortable, he would take them out of the picture.
The shooting: A turning point no one wanted

Following a misunderstanding during the Great Tokyo Exorcism Zone, Yakumaru shoots Cross in the heart. The worst part of this scene was that Yakumaru was wrong, as he felt like Cross was about to pull out a weapon when there was no indication of that. It was his prejudice, and in that moment, he not only shot him, but these shots were hit in vital organs.
Worse, we see a devastating detail: a single tear leaking from Cross’s third eye. Now we know that these tears are harmful, even fatal, due to the strain they put on the brain. Maybe this could be a symbolism by Gege Akutami to strongly imply death, or at least hint to his readers that his life is hanging by a thread.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 13: Confirmation or misdirection?

The chapter begins with Maru standing over Cross’s motionless body. Dabura, their mentor and one of the strongest Rumelians alive, reacts instantly by severing Yakumaru’s arm. Usami in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 13 attempts to restrain him with Cursed Speech, but Dabura shrugs it off, showing how high emotions and stakes have become.
While the chapter’s presentation implies Cross is dead, there is still no explicit confirmation. And in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, “implied dead” is not always “dead for good.” We know there could be a chance for him to pull through, just like how Nobara made her entry at the end of the original narrative.
Is there a chance for Cross to survive?

This is less likely, but still possible. In Jujutsu Kaisen lore, even fatal-looking injuries can be healed with the Reverse Cursed Technique. Dabura’s power is exceptional, and if anyone can save Cross, it’s him. However, there are two major problems:
- We don’t know if Simurians possess or respond well to RCT
- The third-eye tear suggests irreversible damage
Even if he lives, Cross may not return the same. In the end, nothing is officially confirmed. But the narrative signs, cultural symbolism, and Jujustu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 13 visuals all point to one conclusion that Cross is most likely dead or dying. His fate will now determine the future of human-Simurian relations in this story.
