The fandom of One Piece is always paying attention to the smallest details and connecting the dots around hints that Eiichiro Oda usually leaves in the story. Sometimes they just are fun theories that are so wild that they could not possibly ever be canon, but there are some times where fans have caught on to the clues and predict things before they have even been revealed. The latest popular speculation that is circulating around the internet is how fans are comparing young Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) and young Hody Jones.

At first glance, this sounds like another funny “Oda coincidence,” but the conversation has grown bigger than expected, with fans debating names, race, mythology, and even the possibility of shared origins. This theory started when a few fans started to play around the "Ho D. Jones" pun and connected his relation with Davy Jones, yet another mysterious name in One Piece whose lore is yet to be revealed.

Now, suddenly, this wild One Piece theory gained so much attention that people began posting side-by-side images, and an interesting point emerged: young Hody and young Blackbeard actually do share some striking visual similarities. The way the speculation is being backed up by logic, it has started to feel like there is some genuine logic behind it.

The ‘Jones’ naming One Piece theory and its deeper implications

Before we jump into the name part, it is important to point out what similarities fans have been talking about. Now, both these characters in One Piece have rounded facial structures, wild hair textures, pronounced expressions, and an overall “scrappy, ambitious troublemaker” look. Blackbeard, as a young pirate, was far from the hulking giant we know; he looked more like a wiry, eager upstart with big dreams.

Similarly, young Hody in flashbacks is smaller, angrier, and brimming with ambition. That resemblance alone was enough to ignite the fandom. But as usual, the One Piece community took the idea further. Some fans began asking if there could be a deeper connection. Now coming back to the name, for many, this connection stems from the “Jones” naming debate, which has been trending again. One fan on X has a counter to this theory:

"There is definitely a connection with the Davy clan and Davy Jones (Hody Jones) a legendary pirate/sea monster that was responsible for shipwrecks in the ocean in dodgy circumstances. the connection sounds very strong with imu."

Lots of users argued that since Davy Jones in real-world folklore has an octopus-faced, sea-monster-like appearance, Oda may eventually reveal him as a Fishman in the One Piece universe. If that ends up being true, naming Hody “Jones” could suddenly feel much more deliberate. Another fan on X has noted:

"What if Oda is indirectly telling us that Davy D. Jones was half fishman? Would make sense as to why Imu hates Fishmen & Merfolk."

Another layer to the debate is personality. Both Blackbeard and Hody in One Piece embody twisted ambition fueled by resentment, though for very different reasons. Blackbeard is driven by destiny and self-belief, while Hody is driven by hatred he inherited, not experienced.

So is there anything real behind the resemblance?

So, is there any real connection between young Blackbeard and young Hody Jones? Probably not in a narrative sense. But visually? Yes, the resemblance is definitely there, and the fans aren’t imagining it. At the end of the day, this is classic One Piece fandom energy: noticing patterns, spinning theories, laughing at memes, and having a great time while waiting for the next chapter. Whether Oda intentionally drew them similarly or not, one thing is sure: the conversation isn’t dying anytime soon.
