JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean—The shocking finale and the universe reset that changed JoJo forever

Stone Ocean is the final part of the original continuity of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure before the series rebooted with Steel Ball Run. Araki had to end the Joestar curse in a way that the end would be satisfying to everyone. The ambiguous ending left many fans with lingering questions.

To understand the finale of Stone Ocean, we need to rewind, not just to the start of Part 6, but to the mind of Dio Brando himself. In his pursuit of perfection, Dio developed a theory known as “The Heaven Plan,” outlined in a secret diary burned by Jotaro Kujo but later recovered (in memory disc form) by Enrico Pucci, a priest and Dio’s closest confidant.

Pucci was the final antagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, and the audience was shown that he had a close bond with Dio. That is why, with Dio no more, he decided to take it on himself to carry out the plan. He believed that true happiness would come only when people could know and accept their fates. And thus, he began collecting the pieces needed to reshape the universe itself.

Pucci’s journey in Stone Ocean is nothing short of biblical. He manipulates fate to acquire 36 sinners’ souls, which fuse into the mysterious Green Baby. It was a grotesque fusion of Dio’s DNA and spiritual energy. This being recognizes Pucci after he recites 14 coded words from Dio’s diary, and thus fuses with him to evolve his Stand, Whitesnake, into C-Moon.

Then began the next stage of his plan. Once Pucci positions himself at this specific geographical point and under the proper gravitational conditions, C-Moon evolves into his final Stand: Made in Heaven. This stand power is perhaps one of the most dangerous abilities in the universe of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Made in Heaven in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has the ability to accelerate time exponentially. The world around the characters begins to spin out of control, moving forward in time at increasing speeds. Days become minutes, centuries become hours. Technology, culture, the planet, even the universe itself—everything races toward an inevitable end.

But while time has been accelerated, it has one dangerous rule. Humans remain biologically unaffected. They live their lives in fast-forward while reality crumbles around them. This culminates in the end of the universe, leading to a rebirth of the cosmos, and this time, with Pucci as its architect.

In this newly created universe, everything is eerily similar, except for one horrifying twist. Every living being now remembers their fate. And everyone who died in the original timeline, which Pucci erased, is not supposed to be part of the new timeline.

In this final world, also known as the Ireneverse by some fans, the cast of Stone Ocean is reborn. Jolyne is now Irene, a girl with a peaceful life and no memory of the horrors she once endured.

Anasui is Anakiss, Ermes is Eldis, and Weather Report reappears as a mysterious hitchhiker. Without the Joestar birthmark, there are no Stands, no battles, and no trace of Dio. Just ordinary people, living ordinary lives.

While the events of Stone Ocean were undone in this new universe, the original events of Parts 1–5 remain canon in the original timeline. Those stories happened in the original universe. They’re still canon.

The universe seen at the end of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is separate. The rebooted universe, where Irene and her friends live peacefully. Meanwhile, Steel Ball Run (Part 7) begins a completely new, alternate continuity with a fresh Joestar bloodline.

Final thoughts

Unlike Part 3’s deus ex timestop or Part 5’s confusing Requiem logic, Part 6’s ending is thematically rich, emotionally impactful, and narratively bold. It kills off beloved characters. It resets the universe. It ends the Joestar saga. And yet, it ends with hope.

While Irene and her friends may never know the battles they once fought, their peaceful lives are a victory in themselves. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean didn’t just end with waves. It washed the slate clean, and with it, the sins of the past.
