Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo brings back a character from the original series, but it's not who people wanted

The follow-up manga keeps throwing fans curveballs with new characters. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo just dropped chapter 15, and it gave us a nostalgic moment that totally came out of nowhere.

However, the returning character wasn't Gojo, Yuji, or any of the fan-favorite sorcerers most readers hoped to see. Instead, we got to see Ui Ui (Mei Mei's little brother) again, only now he's a lot older and running the New Shadow Style School.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 15, titled "Forbidden Technique Unsealed," features the reappearance of Ui Ui in a surprising new role. The chapter starts off with Yuka Okkotsu readying herself for what looks to be quite a battle against Dabura, an alien overlord hailing from Simuria. As tensions mount before the confrontation between Earth's sorcerer and the alien warrior, Ui Ui makes his dramatic entrance.

Now wearing his deceased sister’s signature hairdo, an older version of Ui Ui walks into the scene and introduces himself as the head of the New Shadow Style School. This is quite a shift from the original series, where Ui Ui was named as the successor by none other than Atsuya Kusakabe himself.

Ui Ui's recent reveal as the new leader of the New Shadow Style provides him with a more well-rounded feel, as in the original series, he was a loyal assistant to Mei Mei, as well as having an important role at times, especially against Ryomen Sukuna, with his Spatial Transfer Technique. However, he was still seen as the support role, rather than a key player in the major storylines.

Seventy years after the Culling Game, Ui Ui has become a master of the Simple Domain. The most recent chapter hints at him also obtaining Crow Manipulation, a cursed technique from his sister, since crows were swarming the battle (in Tokyo).

A Philosophy of Jujutsu Capitalism

The Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo shows that Ui Ui has granted his promise of Jujutsu Capitalism (or capitalist-themed cursed techniques) from an idea similar to that of Mei Mei's Mercenary approach to sorcery. Ui Ui seems to have taken his sister's legacy further and created his influence in the sorceress world.

When meeting with Dabura, Ui Ui welcomes the alien king. He goes on to tell him that the Earth has had 70 years of superficial peace; therefore, today's generation no longer knows what true power is. Ui Ui also says that Dabura will show mankind the true horrors of curses and violent death.

Setting the Stage for Epic Battles

In Chapter 15, Ui Ui introduces the battle between Yuka Okkotsu and Dabura. His descriptions show the stakes involved in the fight between Yuka Okkotsu and Dabura. He talks about how there is a large contrast between the way Earth has quieted itself and how the Simurian warrior is an "actual" threat to Earth.

Additionally, he is representative of a generational divide that has occurred within the series Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. While Ui Ui is one of the few remaining members of the last generation, Yuka and the other guardians and sorcerers of Earth must now become the guardians of Earth as their predecessors did.

While Ui Ui wasn't the returning character fans expected or necessarily wanted, his reappearance in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo serves important narrative purposes. As the sequel continues its six-month run, readers can appreciate these callbacks even while hoping for more prominent character returns in future chapters.
