Maru’s reality-warping curse technique overwhelms Tsuguri

This chapter starts with Maru not holding himself back, which in turn leads the readers to understand the full extent of his cursed technique. We now know that he has the ability to warp reality itself, and this is not a good match-up for Tsuguri. For someone with Heavenly Restrictions, cause he has overwhelming physical strength, but in comparison to this cursed technique, there is a clear imbalance.

Their fight in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17 is fast-paced, violent, and for most of the time dialogue-free so that readers can focus on the battle itself rather than on the lore. It is clear that Tsuguri is outmatched, and no matter how sharp his instincts or how refined his physical prowess, he possibly cannot keep up with a technique that actively reshapes the world around him.

The Gojo clan, Yuka’s birth, and a father’s disappearance

While this fight is ongoing, we get a glimpse of Tsuguri's inner monologue in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17. As he is being pushed to a point where it seems like he is going to be defeated, Tsuguri thinks of his family. More specifically, about his father, who disappeared after Yuka was born. As the chapter clarifies that their father vanished shortly after Yuka was born, with the Ten Shadows Technique, a power forbidden and heavily restricted by the Gojo clan.

While early translations remain rough, the implication is clear: Yuka’s existence fundamentally altered the family’s fate. Tsuguri questions whether his father’s role was ever truly that of a parent, or merely a tool for the clan to produce a powerful sorcerer. Adding further intrigue, a maid recalls seeing his father speaking with a scarred man in a hood, which is strongly implied to be Yuji Itadori, whose only overheard words were, “It doesn’t matter.” That single dialogue has not strongly implied that Itadori could have been involved with the Gojo Clan.

Back in the present, Maru in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17 decisively ends the fight. He traps Tsuguri, slams him into a building, and buries him under collapsing debris using floating cars manipulated by his gravity-based technique. As he fades in and out of consciousness, Tsuguri reflects on death, but not as a warrior who has made peace the outcome, but as something he cannot yet accept. His reason is simple and devastating: Yuka was always there for him, so he has to be there for her. Even a noble death means nothing if it leaves her alone.

Ra, the Queen of curses, and the birth of a new power

This is where Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17 takes a turn. Tsuguri feels his grandfather's presence, and suddenly, from the shadow, we see Ra emerging. She is the queen of curses. The artwork portraying her character will send a chill down the reader's spine as her appearance is immediately unsettling. We see that she criticises Tsuguri because of how much he resembles Maki and makes it clear that she did not really have any desire to help him out.

It was because of Yuta's request that she showed herself. In Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17, she offered power through a binding vow and gave him one simple instruction to say, "I accept." When he does, cursed energy erupts outward, completely shocking Maru. For someone who supposedly has no cursed energy, the pressure makes no sense.

The reveal is visually stunning: Tsuguri's Heavenly Restricted body fuses with Ra’s cursed form, creating one of the most striking transformations in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17. In a single punch, he sends Maru flying, instantly shifting the balance of the battle. The chapter ends with Ra declaring Maru the source of the disturbance and an editor’s note teasing the full reemergence of the Queen of Curses.

Final thoughts on Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17

While action-heavy, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17 will manage to become of the most memorable chapters just because of how it managed to combine raw spectacle with emotional depth and long-term setup. With Ra and Mahoraga now both in play, the final phase of Modulo is shaping up to be its most explosive and consequential arc yet.
