Maru vs. Tsurugi might be truly heartbreaking, but it could allow the old cast to appear in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

After looking at the upcoming battle between Maru and Tsurugi in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, it has been set up in a way that feels like someone from the old cast will have to intervene. Currently, it has built itself up to be an emotionally challenging moment because only a few chapters ago, things felt like both of these characters were opening up to each other. Now things seem to have spiraled into something darker, heavier, and deeply personal.

This is causing fans to speculate that maybe Gege Akutami might introduce Megumi himself to come in between this duo. Although he himself might likely be unable to stop them, despite both fighters being Grade 2. While this chaotic battle seems inevitable, if we look into this with deeper lenses, then there is something even more intriguing.

This upcoming battle could be the moment that allows the old Jujutsu Kaisen cast to re-enter the narrative in a meaningful way, and for now, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo may desperately need them. There is a good number of readers who started this spin-off series in the hope of watching the beloved characters from the original storyline. And so far, while we have gotten glimpses, no one has made an official entry.

The tragedy of Maru vs. Tsurugi is already being foreshadowed

The Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo fanbase is in chaos right now with memes everywhere, confusion about Yuji’s whereabouts, and a constant fear of who might die next. From making jokes to dark predictions, the fandom already senses something awful is coming. Because we now know that both Maru and Tsurugi in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo carry emotional baggage similar to the original cast:

  • Maru is carrying the heavy responsibility and determination to protect what little he has.
  • Tsurugi, a character many believe might undergo a Maki-like awakening if things get too dire, because he wants Yuka to live and not throw her life away.

The fight isn’t just a tournament clash. It’s two broken young sorcerers fighting in a world that is still trying to rebuild from the trauma of the past. Their emotions are raw, their motives are shaky, and their techniques may spiral out of control. It feels like Gege Akutami has formed a perfect setup for a return from the older generation in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. It would make more sense if the character introduced would understand loss, conflict, and cursed energy on a deeper level.

Yuji's absence in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo might be the biggest clue

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 13 had already confirmed that Yuji is immortal and has stopped aging. Now, to give a character such an upper hand and not introduce him soon would be a wasteful setup. While Gege Akutami is infamous for throwing unpredictable curveballs, it feels like this one is not meant to misdirect the readers.

If he arrives right as the fight reaches its emotional breaking point, it mirrors classic JJK: the old generation stepping in when the new one is about to shatter. Yuji’s appearance in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo could naturally reintroduce the emotional legacy of Gojo, Yuta, Maki, Megumi, and even Nobara.

Final thoughts

Gege Akutami’s writing philosophy is consistent across both series: pain leads to growth, and tragedy leads to connection. There is a chance that Maru vs. Tsurugi might end in:

  • A death
  • A double KO
  • A desperate intervention
  • Or an awakening that spirals out of control

But no matter what happens, the emotional weight of the battle in Modulo is too big for the new cast to bear alone, and that is why it makes sense to bring back someone from the old cast. And this heartbreaking battle might be the moment that calls them home.
