We are also introduced to new cast members who will be contributing to this Mononoke film, including the celebrated voice actress Miyuki Sawashiro, who will be playing the role of the Third Empress. With returning staff led by Kenji Nakamura and animation by Studio Kafka and EOTA, the production signals a powerful and polished finale for the cult-favorite franchise.

The narrative is expected to start shortly after the incidents involving the Karakasa umbrella and the raging Fire Rat. Peace in the inner palace proves short-lived, however, as the Medicine Seller senses an unsettling whisper of something else lurking in the shadows. That “something” soon takes shape when Empress Sachiko, despite giving birth to a long-awaited heir, dies mysteriously.

We know that her death, steeped in grief, regret, and unspoken anger, creates the emotional fuel for something monstrous to form. The Medicine Seller arrives to find a terrifying presence: A massive serpent-shaped Mononoke, the Snake God, crawling through the palace with suffocating intent. After temporarily driving it back with a talisman, he realizes that defeating it will require uncovering its Form, Truth, and Reason.

Where the first two Mononoke films explored spirits born from personal trauma and systemic cruelty, the Snake God appears rooted in an even older, deeper injustice. Its origins stretch back 150 years, concealed in the very foundations of the Ooku’s existence. The climax is promised to end with an explosive ending, and fans of this show will not only get to enjoy an intriguing story but also its unique animation style that has made its name in the world of anime.

While fans are celebrating at the casting choice for selecting Miyuki Sawashiro as the Third Empress, this film has new characters who are equally valuable in adding their charm to the story, such as Tokiwai (Fumi Hirano), Sachiko’s wet nurse, and Kawa (Mariko Honda), her loyal maid.

Their roles in this final Mononoke film suggest new layers of palace politics and emotional complexity in a story already marked by resentment, betrayal, and desperation.

Meanwhile, we also have some major cast members from previous chapters like Hiroshi Kamiya as the Medicine Seller, Atsumi Tanezaki as Sachiko, Miyu Irino as the Emperor, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Hokuto Mizorogi making their return to continue the tense spiraling narrative around the Ooku’s corrupt traditions.
