My Hero Academia Ultra is a new series of books that is being released. This has been the topic of discussion among fans since this is fresh content from the creator after the manga’s conclusion. The manga series completed its run back in August of 2024.
While most fans were happy with how the story concluded, there were a few open-ended elements that fans didn’t particularly appreciate. There were a few unresolved elements in the overarching story that needed closure, such as Deku’s relationship with Ochaco and Shigaraki’s original Quirk in the My Hero Academia series.
The My Hero Academia Ultra series seems to be concerned with the latter. Fans believe that we have gained some insight into Shigaraki’s original Quirk. Those who have been watching the series know that he wasn’t born with Decay. This was a part of All For One’s grand plan. Shigaraki Tomura, much like others who were associated with AFO, was a sacrificial pawn to further accelerate his cause.
Therefore, it’s quite clear that Decay is not the original Quirk. If that’s the case, then what was Shigaraki Tomura’s original Quirk? This wasn’t answered in the manga, and that’s where My Hero Academia Ultra comes into the picture. The official fanbook in question seems to have shown Shigaraki’s original Quirk, which AFO managed to use.
Shigaraki Tomura was born with a flying Quirk, which was then taken away by AFO and replaced with Decay. As indicated by the My Hero Academia Ultra book, Shigaraki Tomura could have potentially become a Pro Hero. Such a Quirk would have been quite useful in rescue operations and in combat. This is why fans believe that Shigaraki could have potentially become a hero, if not for the Decay Quirk.
The Quirk in question seemed to give AFO a boost mid-air. We never saw him use this Quirk in the My Hero Academia series again. It was shown in the manga series for a very brief period of time. We could see that it allowed the user to float in the air, while also having the ability to push off while being suspended up there. This is how fans got to know about Shigaraki’s true Quirk in the overarching story, prior to AFO’s interference.
Shigaraki Tomura’s role in My Hero Academia

Shigaraki Tomura is one of the main antagonists in the animanga series. He and AFO are the primary antagonists, who pose a threat to the end of all humanity. Unfortunately, Shigaraki was a victim of circumstances. As a child, he had to endure the death of his loved ones because of his Quirk. He assumed that Decay was his own, and it claimed the lives of every single person he held dear to his heart.
This was his origin story that marked the beginning of his descent into madness and violence. Eventually, he and All For One joined hands, with the former not knowing his partner’s true intentions. AFO’s only goal was world domination and absorbing every single Quirk that ever existed. His avarice knew no bounds, and Shigaraki was a mere stepping stone for his success. Therefore, Shigaraki plays the role of an antagonist in the series. While it was AFO who manipulated things and mapped out Shigaraki’s life, he still killed innocent people for his goals.
Shigaraki Tomura might have had an unnamed flying Quirk that could allow him to float and create bursts of acceleration in the air. However, this was swapped out by AFO as he implanted Decay in him. This information was provided in the My Hero Academia Ultra series, which fans have rightly pointed out.
