The Darwin Incident anime centers on a biological experiment gone awry when the Animal Liberation Alliance rescues a pregnant chimpanzee from a testing facility. The chimp gave birth to Charlie, half-human and half-chimp. 15 years later, his adoptive parents sent him to a normal high school where he became best friends with Lucy, an intelligent female student.

Since its launch in June 2020 in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon, this Manga has been very successful. Not only did the series win the Manga Taisho award, but it also earned an Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. In 2022, it was ranked 10th in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook among all the titles aimed at male readers and was nominated for both the 47th and 48th editions of the Kodansha Manga Awards.

Darwin Incident is published in English by Kodansha USA. As of May 2025, there are nine volumes out in Japan. By May 2024, the series had already reached over 1.6 million copies printed due to a growing fan base interested in watching it animated.
