Rocks D. Xebec’s last words and a death that raises more questions

One Piece Chapter 1166 starts with the aftermath of the iconic battle between Rocks versus Roger and Garp. All three of them are exhausted, and we see a deeply injured Rocks. Before he has his last breath, Rock's final lines are surprisingly introspective. He says something on the lines of, “Ahh… Didn’t work, huh? Roge, Garp run.” Before he could do anything else, the chapter shifts the focus to Garling, Sommers, and Maffey arriving at the scene. These people do not waste time, as One Piece Chapter 1166 shows us how Garling plunges his sword into Rocks, making sure to end his life most cruelly. Rocks D. Xebec will be remembered as a legendary character in all of One Piece, as even as he died, he thanked them for stopping his mindless rampage.

These raw scans have now confirmed that Rocks did not die at the hands of Garp and Roger, a long-standing theory many fans wanted to see stay ambiguous. Because the final attack came from Garling, we could speculate whether Rocks has truly been killed or Eiichiro Oda has some more twists in the story he is yet to reveal. Then the chapter shows us a montage, showcasing young Newgate, Big Mom, Kaido, and Shakky, while God Valley begins to sink into the sea. No lasers. No buster call. Just an island swallowing itself, it is an eerie parallel to Lulusia.

Then, in One Piece Chapter 1166, we see Roger’s crew returning to the Oro Jackson to treat their wounds. And then comes the scene everyone waited for: the opening of the treasure chest. As seen in Film Red’s special volume, Shanks is discovered inside an infant, smiling innocently amidst chaos. Although for now there is no information on why baby Shanks decided to stay in it but it is safe to assume that it could just have been a child trying to safeguard himself.

Harald’s guilt, Loki’s disillusionment, and the Giants’ future

This One Piece chapter then shifts to the giants of Elbaph, and the storytelling becomes unexpectedly heavy. Harald, who is burdened with guilt for not helping Rocks during the God Valley incident, takes it out on a rampaging giant. His frustration turns into him making a promise that from now on, he will dedicate himself to peace and strive to bring Elbaph into the world community.

Loki, meanwhile, learns the truth that Rocks is not the god “Nika” he imagined. The disillusionment shapes the Loki we know today, planting early seeds for his future political and ideological role. These scenes in One Piece Chapter 1166 also clarify generational conflicts, Harald's strained reputation, and how misinformation warped the giants’ place in global politics for centuries.

One of the most hyped moments is finally here: young Dragon locked up in an underground Marine cell, visited by his father, Garp. Their exchange is brutally short. Dragon declares that he is going to quit being part of the Navy. To that, Garp has nothing to say but just quietly agrees. And then Dragon continues to tell his father that he despises him. Their conversation is cold and abrupt. And it’s perfect for their dynamic. Dragon’s resentment is finally spoken aloud, and this moment in One Piece Chapter 1166 marks the beginning of the man who would one day found the Revolutionary Army.

Harald’s sacrifice: A devastating final page

The climax of One Piece Chapter 1166 is a full double-spread that readers will likely discuss for years to come. To prove the sincerity of his peace oath, Harald tears his own horns out, an act symbolic of rejecting the violent legacy of the giants and kneeling before the World Government:

“Let me atone for what happened during the last 1000 years! So that the children of Elbaph can live without hurting anyone! I would become a slave if it’s for that cause!”

By the end of One Piece Chapter 1166, his face drenched in blood, his horns in his hands, Harald’s gesture is heartbreaking. It’s also hopeless because the last panel zooms in on Imu’s eyes, staring coldly at the scene.

Ultimately, Chapter 1166 may be remembered as the turning point of the God Valley flashback. Rocks fall, Shanks is found, Dragon walks his own path, and Harald gives everything only for Imu to watch silently from the shadows. The end is near. And the truth of history is finally coming into focus.
