Eiichiro Oda has continued to deliver yet another emotionally charged chapter that will make readers teary-eyed. It is a short chapter that continues to reveal the tragedy of King Harlad and his wife, Ida. Imu is as evil as they come, as it traded power for control and misused Harlad, and it wants the power of the giants.

Every time readers realise how corrupt and power hungry the World Government is, they end up showing themselves to be even more rotten, and in One Piece Chapter 1168, we saw how cunning Imu can get. The title of this chapter is "The Snow of Elbaph," and it has the atmosphere of grief and loss from the very first page. While the translations might now be accurate, they paint a fair picture, giving us an idea of what this installment holds.

According to the raw scans, One Piece Chapter 1168 talks about how much the global image of Giants has improved in the eyes of the world. It is because of all the trading, partnership, and Harald's diplomacy. If we look at the face value, King Harlad comes across as a king who is genuinely putting in all this effort to achieve peace and integration.

On the other hand, this chapter also shows us the dark side of this possible alliance. As Loki was thrown into a detention center, because of the rampage he had, where he destroyed the Brewers' village. It is the same “underworld” where the Straw Hats were dragged earlier this arc. The connection is deliberate, suggesting this place has always been a shadowy part of Elbaph’s political machinery.

Meanwhile, Harald comes back home after his mission and is comforting Ida as they share a quiet moment. He makes a promise to her that Elbaf will return to its former glory, and they will be part of the rest of the world, just like the old days. But then this moment does not last long as tragedy strikes, and Ida dies.

In One Piece Chapter 1168, we are shown that snow falls heavily outside as Harald and Hajrudin cry at her bedside. Loki sits silently in prison. The chapter doesn’t over-dramatize Ida’s death; it’s hauntingly simple, which makes it even more painful.

The raw scans of One Piece Chapter 1168 continue to reveal a major lore detail: Shanks was originally meant to be promoted to a “Knight of God.” But due to an undisclosed reason, he was nowhere to be found, meaning Harald became next in line. The Five Elders escort Harald to the Empty Throne room, except it isn’t empty.

Imu was sitting on this, and the scene can only be described as cosmic horror. Harald trembles, questioning why someone occupies the throne that symbolizes world equality. Imu calls him forward and begins an unholy transformation and marking Harald with the Depths Covenant.

That is when Imu in One Piece Chapter 1168 proclaims him a “Knight of Immortality.” But we know that immortality is not a gift but a means of Imu trying to control others. After giving this power, it continues to demand the creation of an Abyss Pentagram in Elbaph and then gives a chilling final instruction: after fulfilling Mu’s last order, Elbaph will be allowed to join the World Government.

Back in Elbaph, Harald carries out Imu’s orders, creating the Abyss in Aurust Castle. But when Imu commands him to transform Elbaph into a military superpower rivaling the Marines, Harald tries to resist and fails. The Depths Covenant ends up overriding his will, and his body moves without his consent. Now King Harlad is more of a puppet king. He might be immortal, powerful, but what is is point of all those abilities if he is enslaved?

In a final desperate attempt to break free, Harald in One Piece Chapter 1168 orders his soldiers to tie him to a pillar and summons Jarul and Loki to the castle. This is where Loki’s story in the present timeline will pick up again. This means the flashback is now tightening toward its climax.

The narrator confirms the unthinkable

The final panel shows Harald’s iconic portrait, the one where he is holding onto this sword proudly. But the narration in One Piece Chapter 1168 brutally undercuts that heroic image:

“On that day, a mass slaughter occurred at the castle… leading the most beloved King of Elbaph, the wise sovereign Harald, to lose his life.”

The irony is sharp: Harald, who was known to be wise, ended up making the fatal mistake of trusting the World Government.

With Loki freed from prison and rushing toward the castle, and Harald in the grip of Imu’s possession, One Piece Chapter 1168 positions the next installment to showcase:

  • The truth of Harald’s death
  • The secret Elbaph Devil Fruit
  • Imu’s terrifying sovereignty powers
  • The end of Elbaph’s greatest tragedy

This may be a short chapter, but within these pages a lot took place. It has set the fuse for what may become one of the most important lore climaxes in One Piece history.
