One of the most mysterious characters in all of mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece series is Imu, the World Government’s true leader. While fans have seen Imu in action before during the Egghead Arc, details on their abilities are still unknown as of this article’s writing. However, this demonstration of power alone proved to fans that they’re one of the most dangerous characters.

The latest spoilers for the manga’s upcoming chapter 1149 further proved this, seeing Imu intervene in the events on Elbaph. While they themselves didn’t appear on the island, the latest spoilers claim they somehow took control of Gunko’s mind from afar. Although spoilers have yet to detail how this is possible, the act in and of itself further drives home how dangerous Imu is.

For example, the coming weeks of One Piece show Gunko's ability to utilize Imu’s powers while under their control. This may include the presumed Conqueror’s Haki they have, as well as their apparent ability to manipulate the Gorosei and presumably the Holy Knights’ immortality. It’s also even possible that Gunko can now use whatever transformation Imu did in the Egghead Arc.

While this is all hypothetical and, of course, an extreme list of possibilities, it’s nevertheless something that could soon be confirmed. However, even in a much more basic sense, Imu’s ability to control their subordinates’ minds can have disastrous results. Even on a simple level of intelligence gathering, it further proves just how dangerous this enigmatic ruler of the world is.

Imu’s newest ability in One Piece could make them one of the series’ most dangerous characters

On its most basic level, Imu’s apparent ability to take control of their subordinates in One Piece is one of the best intelligence-gathering abilities the series has. At any point in time, Imu could take over their subordinates’ minds and use them as a means of viewing the outside world’s events. This not only allows them to be up to date with current events, but also protects them.

Were they suspicious of one of their subordinates preparing to betray them, they could likely forcibly control their mind and find out the truth themselves. Moreover, Imu could use this subordinate to lure in and eliminate any co-conspirators, all without lifting a finger. Whether by using their own powers or that of the subordinate in question, it’s an easy enough task.

One Piece’s latest ability may also be a means of converting enemies into allies, which may explain the spoilers’ mention of Gunko regaining control of her mind. Assuming this interpretation is accurate, Imu can slowly but surely build an army of the world’s strongest fighters. This may even be how the original Gorosei group came to be.

This hypothetical aspect of Imu’s apparent abilities may also explain why Joy Boy was defeated during the Void Century. Imu didn’t simply gather their own forces to defeat Joy Boy, but even turned the legendary pirate’s own allies against him. If they were able to do so in a way in which he didn’t suspect anything, then it’s a no-brainer as to why he lost their battle.

Final thoughts

While the above interpretation of the applications of Imu’s newest power is speculative, it’ll likely be proven true given what fans currently know. The line about Gunko regaining control of her mind in the latest One Piece chapter 1149 spoilers is incredibly telling and supportive. Fans can expect to learn more about Imu’s new ability in the coming weeks and releases.
