The world of One Piece is filled with wondrous Devil Fruits that grant creative powers to users while expanding the lore. Among the many supernatural fruits featured throughout the series, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi has been making waves within the fandom recently.

The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is Bartholomew Kuma’s Devil Fruit in One Piece and allows him to repel anything with his paws. Since the anime is currently adapting Kuma’s highly anticipated backstory, fans will get acquainted with the origins of the cyborg’s powers as well as the significance of his possessing it.

The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, also known as the Paw-Paw Fruit, is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that does not sound intimidating initially. This is because the fruit makes its user a Paw Human, giving them paw pads on their hands. However, as seen through Kuma’s usage, it has extreme destructive potential and incredible versatility.

The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi allows its user to push anything away at great force upon coming into contact with their paws. Its repelling effect can push away physical objects, people, attacks, and even abstract concepts such as pain and fatigue. Kuma mainly utilizes this Devil Fruit to trap and control elements within paw-shaped bubbles.

By compressing air within his bubbles, Kuma can create devastating bombs that cause mass explosions. This is best seen through his memorable Ursus Shock. Most impressively, these bubbles allow Kuma to store his own memories and transfer pain from victims to another target.

Though the paws are only present on Kuma’s hands, they have never been penetrated in the series so far. Kuma can comfortably intercept blades and face multiple enemies. Additionally, Kuma can use the immense speed of repelling on both himself and others to transport them so rapidly that it seems like warping.

He had used this ability on the Straw Hats after the Marineford War to send them to safety. However, the accuracy of the destinations chosen by Kuma depends upon how well he knows the places. Kuma has applied the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi in every possible manner in One Piece.

Before being turned into a cyborg, he had absorbed all the problems faced by the old residents of the Sorbet Kingdom, facing the repercussions himself. He had also stored his memories inside a giant bubble stored by Vegapunk, which Bonney got to experience in the Egghead Arc.

In the iconic scene in Thriller Bark, Kuma confronted the Straw Hats and easily overpowered them. However, he ultimately saved Luffy by transferring his pain to Zoro. He has defeated countless enemies through his paw powers, though secretly supporting the main characters.

Theories surrounding the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi in One Piece

As One Piece anime watchers recently discovered, Kuma was a slave of the World Government and was caught up in God Valley during the Native Hunting Competition. In this barbaric tradition, two primary prizes were being offered - the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu.

During the chaotic events of the God Valley Incident, Kuma managed to eat the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and transport himself and several others to safety. This brief moment in his backstory has many fans convinced about a major One Piece theory - the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi used to belong to Nefertari D. Lili.

As revealed during the Levely, Imu expressed their discontentment with Lili, who was responsible for spreading the Poneglyphs across the world and carrying on the legacy of the Void Century. This would have been impossible to achieve instantly without a Devil Fruit, and the most ideal power would be that of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi.

While much of Lili's life and death remain a mystery, Imu’s obsession with her was probably the reason why the World Government ended up possessing the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi. However, this eventually fell into the hands of Kuma.

While One Piece has yet to reveal the full lore behind the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, it clearly has a deeper history than simply being a prize of the Celestial Dragons. Regardless of whether it was Lili’s fruit or not, fans are eager to uncover its secrets.
