One-Punch Man: Who is Empty Void?

One-Punch Man introduces many powerful characters, but few are as mysterious as Empty Void. Once the most powerful ninjas in the world, he had a dark, mysterious past filled with secrets and regrets. His tale is intertwined with some of the series’ most pivotal moments and strongest fighters, including Blast and the all-universe being known as “God.”

In One-Punch Man, Empty Void is a legendary assassin who has murdered over 100,000 targets. He grew up in an organization that trained people to become assassins. Those who graduated from the organization turned against each other in a power struggle. He stood alone in the end. That survival marked the beginning of his legacy as the most feared ninja in history.

In chapter 210 of One-Punch Man, we see the backstory of Empty Void. Just like many other heroes like Blast, Empty Void vanquishes monsters. But he was still training people in martial arts. He met Blast when he was fighting one of his students, Dirty Stain, who had become a master. With the help of Blast, he won but swore revenge on what caused his disciple (God) to become a monster.

Empty Void then recruited his younger sister, Selenian Luna, to investigate Blast. He told her to get close to him and get as much information as she could. Down the line, Blast got married to her, but she eventually died in an attack.

While his sister was on her mission, Void worked with Blast to uncover the truth behind mysterious cubes. These cubes in One-Punch Man could transform humans into monsters and connect to the entity known as “God.” But unfortunately, Void mistakenly came in contact with one of the mysterious cubes.

Before he turned evil, Empty Void founded the Ninja Village, a place where people trained to be shinobi. But the objective soon changed, and it became a place where children were brought in and trained to become minions of “God.” As a Mysterious Being, Empty Void put the Ninja Village through harsh trials. He wanted to find those strong enough to serve “God.” The Ninja Village was a terrible place to grow up in.

There is no way out of the place except to pass the courses and graduate. They spend the majority of the day practicing various martial arts and swordplay. The Ninja Village was located deep in the mountains, and ordinary people couldn't reach it. In One-Punch Man, characters like Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, Flashy Flash, Hellfire Flame, and Gale Wind hailed from this town.

As a Mysterious Being, he was no longer the man he used to be. The mysterious cube turned him into a monster and amplified his flaws. Empty Void fought against Blast and lost. He made it back to his village and was placed inside a recovery capsule to recuperate. Because of the barrier around the village, Blast could not find him. All of this took place 15 years before the main story.

One-Punch Man later shows Void returning to his senses. After Saitama defeats him with one punch at Sonic’s hideout in the retconned version of Chapter 210, Void’s body crashes into the ground. He wakes up later when new threats appear, and something changes. His monster form begins to break apart, revealing the man underneath. Blast is overjoyed to see his old friend back to normal. Void is human again.

Even after regaining his mind, Void remembers everything he did while under “God’s” control. He feels deep regret. He knows he caused great pain, especially to the Heavenly Ninja Party, a group of ninjas who graduated from the Ninja Village. But instead of running from the past, Void chooses to face it. He puts aside his guilt to fight “God” and joins Blast once more.

Void, now fully awake in One-Punch Man, steps up. He uses a move called Dimensional Slash to cut the divine beasts in half. This shows that he is still very strong, even after everything he went through. Blast finishes the fight with his powerful attack and closes the rift to save everyone. This showed that this man was on par with Blast and could go at the same level as the S-Rank Class 1 Hero.

Afterward, Sonic and Flash try to attack Void, still angry about what he did in the past. Void defends himself easily, but Blast steps in to explain everything. Void didn’t act on its own. He was controlled. Void doesn’t make excuses. But now, he wants to fix it and protect others from falling into the grasp of God.

One-Punch Man makes it clear that Void still has a long way to go. He doesn’t ask for forgiveness. Instead, he tells the others he’ll make things right by continuing the fight against “God.” Alongside Blast, he goes to another dimension. There, they find the body of another Divine Beast named Kirin. Void asks if Blast defeated it, but Blast says no. It’s clear that Saitama had already taken care of it.

Conclusion

Empty Void’s story in One-Punch Man is one of power, failure, and redemption. He was once the strongest killer on Earth, then a servant of evil, and now a man trying to make things right. Though his past can’t be erased, his future now has a new purpose: to stop “God” and protect humanity from falling into the same darkness that once claimed him.
