Currently, the anime community has been hyped and excited because it has been confirmed that Ruri Dragon is finally getting an anime adaptation. It has not even been so long since the news was released, and the fandom has already sent waves all over social media. The announcement was made on December 28, 2025, which also happened to be the birthday of the protagonist, Ruri Aoki.

Moreover, as we know that Kyoto Animation is taking over animating this series, fans have sky-high expectations. It is all because this studio is renowned for releasing series that usually have emotionally grounded storytelling, which is backed up by their meticulous animation quality.

The story of Ruri Dragon is about Ruri Aoki, who at first looks like an ordinary high school girl. But her life takes a drastic turn when one day she wakes up to find horns growing from her head. To add to the comedic turn when Ruri goes to her mother to get clarification about the situation, it is casually revealed that she is a half-dragon. This was because her father was literally a dragon.

As the story was originally a slice-of-life manga so even after our protagonist got to know about this life-altering news, the series does not focus on battles or even have fantasy arcs. The main reason why the story of Ruri Dragon caught the attention of manga readers was because of how it chose to divert its focus on small, human moments: awkward classroom reactions, uncontrollable dragon abilities flaring up at the worst times, and Ruri’s quiet determination to continue living a normal life despite no longer being normal at all.

As the spark has been lit in the fandom, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Some common reactions on social media platforms have been:

"Really looking forward to it," said one fan.
"Never seen Kyoto adapt a shonen before I wanna see how they do bc they always cook🔥🔥," added another fan.

The common thought in the fandom is that they are really looking forward to seeing how Kyoto Animation is going to bring the story to life.

Kyoto Animation is a studio that is popularly known for releasing shows like Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Violet Evergarden, and Hyouka. Since they have almost perfected the art of animating slice-of-life series, it feels like Ruri Dragon is a great choice for them to work on. Interestingly, fans have been especially curious to see how Kyoto Animation approaches a Shonen Jump series, as the studio is rarely associated with traditional Jump adaptations. The studio has released a small teaser snippet with the confirmation of the anime adaptation, which also ended up reinforcing optimism.

Final thoughts

In the end, the hype for Ruri Dragon is real, and the fandom is now patiently waiting for the day they will be able to watch this anime. It feels like the series-long journey is finally about to enter its most exciting chapter yet. If anyone wants to try reading the manga, as the wait for the anime would be long, it is available on Shueisha Manga Plus and Viz Media.
