Severe criticism makes Toei redo One Piece anime's Egghead Nika scene

When it comes to anime adaptations, expectations are always sky-high for One Piece. But when you’re dealing with one of the most anticipated moments of the entire Egghead arc, the reveal of Luffy’s Nika form, you simply cannot afford to stumble.

That’s exactly what happened with Episode 1140 of the One Piece anime, which drew a wave of backlash so severe that Toei Animation quickly responded in the following week with a reworked version of the Nika scene, leaving fans both relieved and frustrated.

In what can only be described as an unusually quick turnaround for a major anime studio, Toei essentially redid the Nika scene in the very next episode. Episode 1141 gave fans the sequence they had been hoping for: brighter colors, cleaner animation, and a much more faithful adaptation of Luffy’s iconic pose from the manga.

For many, the redo worked. The scene now carried the same impact that Eiichiro Oda’s manga panel had delivered, complete with the sense of awe and liberation that Luffy as Nika embodies. Fans praised the studio for listening to the criticism, with one writing: “Scene so goated they show 3 different versions.”

But at the same time, the decision raised new questions. Why wasn’t this level of polish given to Episode 1140 in the first place? Why wait for backlash before getting it right?

The debate inevitably circled back to the question of whether the anime elevates or undermines Oda’s manga. For many fans, the Egghead arc has been a chance for Toei to prove it can do justice to Oda’s storytelling. But when frames look “worse than the source material,” as some fans complained, it becomes hard to defend.

Toei’s Strategy: Saving the budget or losing control while animating One Piece?

The Egghead arc is one of the most pivotal in One Piece, setting the stage for the transition into Elbaph and beyond. With so many heavy-hitting story beats on the horizon, including Luffy’s battles with Kizaru, Saturn, and the Blackbeard Pirates, Toei may be strategically allocating resources, choosing which episodes get top-tier treatment.

Some fans are sympathetic to this idea. But others see it as a misstep. For a series that has been riding high on the success of the Gear 5 episodes earlier this year, the dip in Episode 1140 felt like a breach of trust. And that may be the crux of the issue: One Piece deserves consistency, not just sporadic brilliance.

Final thoughts

The Nika scene debacle highlights both the strengths and weaknesses of modern anime production. On one hand, Toei showed responsiveness by improving the scene immediately after the backlash.

The Egghead arc in One Piece is far from over, and the most explosive moments are still to come. If Toei can maintain the energy and polish seen in Episode 1141 moving forward, the arc could still cement itself as one of the most memorable in One Piece’s anime history. But if the studio slips again, fans may be less forgiving next time.

For now, though, Toei has bought itself some breathing room. The Nika scene has been redeemed, and fans can once again look forward to the battles ahead. But as one fan wryly put it: “Toei is gonna cook with the upcoming episodes, but consistency is all I’m asking for.”
