Wandance Episode 5 took an unexpected turn in Madhouse's hip-hop-based series. While the dance battle between Kabo and Iori was certainly a highlight, the most impressive moment happened in the rain. There was a question that has been alluded to since the pilot episode: Are Kabo and Wanda just dance partners, or is there something more than friendship brewing between them?

The umbrella scene and the unintentional, but now intentional, holding of Wanda's hand finally answered that question for everyone. Neither Kabo nor Wanda ordered the convenience store manager to stop calling Kabo her boyfriend two different times.

Wandance Episode 5 began with the highly awaited clash between Kabo and Iori. The veteran dancer showed great fluidity and confidence in the opening of the episode when he combined hip-hop movements with breaking. He used moves like windmills that were executed with technical skill, demonstrating he was able to perform well.

Kabo looked strong during the first round; he was good with rhythm and staying in time with the music. However, after an audience formed, his performance became very poor. He became too conscious of the audience and added too much energy instead of staying with the music.

He went boom boom boom for the whole performance while not using the all-important fast-slow, big-small movements. Not only did he exhaust himself, but he also did not provide anything the audience would remember.

After losing the match, Kabo asks club president On Miyao for advice. Wandance Episode 5 offered some key character development for On's character as she spoke about her dreams and future aspirations. On shared with Kabo that she hopes to one day become a director, citing when she was in first grade and an encounter with the Ne-Yo music video.

On's advice was quite impactful for the development of Kabo's character. On encouraged Kabo by saying it's okay to draw inspiration from others while starting. According to On, dancers will find their style eventually through practice and self-discovery.

There was also some light-hearted teasing when Kabo visited On's third-year girls' class. These moments provided some levity when transitioned back to serious dance learning sequences.

The romantic moment of Wandance Episode 5 happened at the end. Wanda's old part-time job manager called Kabo her boyfriend on two occasions, and neither teen corrected the manager. These informal denials of his interest made viewers obsessed with the pairing.

The amusing mix-up happened when Kabo reached his hand out to see if it had stopped raining. Wanda assumed it meant he wanted to hold hands and grabbed it right away. Even upon realizing her mistake, she still held his hand.

Next, the two compared hand sizes before properly holding hands while walking under the umbrella. Moving from accidental contact to intentional is a significant step in the relationship development of the two shy dancers. Wandance Episode 5 moved both plot and character forward at the same time. The dance battle had a clear separation of skill levels, but still provided hope for Kabo to improve.

While the appropriate CGI debate continued, this episode proved that strong writing, along with chemistry, can carry a series through. As the season nears the mid-way point, the groundwork laid in Wandance Episode 5 now leads to emotional conflicts and emotional relationships.
