While Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly an immensely popular series, it is also highly divisive. This is mainly due to its extended cast, many of whom are never explored properly in the story, leaving their potential wasted. Among the list of characters whom Gege fails to give their due diligence, Yorozu stands at the very top.
Yorozu is a sorcerer who existed during the Heian Era and is obsessed with Ryomen Sukuna. During the Culling Game, many acclaimed individuals from history were brought back in order for Kenjaku to achieve his plan. Yorozu was one such crucial person who played a big role in helping Sukuna switch his body from Itadori to Megumi.
During the height of tensions, Yorozu, who had been turned into a cursed object in the past and ingested by Tsumiki, reincarnated and infiltrated the group of the main cast under her new guise. As Megumi was attempting to help his sister leave the Culling Game, Yorozu revealed her true identity, even adding a rule to the Culling Game where players could freely enter and exit colony borders.

She then taunted Megumi and left the scene, allowing Sukuna to take over Itadori’s body and feed Megumi his finger. Finally, the plan he had been setting into motion since the start of Jujutsu Kaisen worked, as Sukuna gained control over Megumi’s body as well as his Ten Shadows Technique.
After a series of chaotic events, Sukuna went to Sendai Colony to face Yorozu, who had been wishing to fight and kill him. Though Yorozu put up a valiant battle with her Construction technique and Perfect Sphere, she stood little chance against Sukuna, who killed her with the help of Maharoga. She died within just a few chapters of her introduction, leading to outrage within the fandom.
Why Yorozu is a wasted character in Jujutsu Kaisen
During her short stay, Yorozu was only used as a plot device to allow Sukuna to perfectly manipulate his new form. By making Megumi kill his sister’s body, the King of Curses could plunge the deuteragonist’s soul into the abyss, ensuring little resistance to his plans.
While this worked, Gege still failed to properly utilize Yorozu’s character, especially when she was so well-connected to the central themes of Jujutsu Kaisen. Even before delving into her narrative relevance, Yorozu was an unhinged and fascinating person who was confident, brash, and devoted to Sukuna.
This was far from a traditional feeling of love, however, as Yorozu wished to kill him, believing it would bring the two of them closer together. Even when she died, she was happy to have been beaten by her lover, giving him the Kamutoke.
Yorozu was the only link that fans had to Sukuna during the Heian Era, which was his prime years. She had been respected at that point due to her combat prowess and abilities, defeating the Five Empty Generals and gaining the respect of the Fujiwara Clan. Later, she met Sukuna during the Harvest Festival and instantly embraced him, sensing his loneliness.
However, she was soon admonished and slashed by Sukuna, only deepening her feelings for him. As a result, she took Kenjaku’s help to be brought back during the Culling Game. Gege handled the Yorozu-Tsumiki plotline with startling brevity, especially when it could have provided a much-needed emphasis on Sukuna’s past.
Additionally, since Yorozu was in control of Tsumiki's body, her continued presence could have provided added layers of intensity and emotion to Megumi’s mental strain and his willingness to fight back against the King of Curses. Most importantly, however, Yorozu is one of the few female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen who reached the upper echelon of power.
Her Construction seemed to be one of the most captivating abilities in the series, where she could create anything she wanted, ranging from insect wings and armor to the manipulation of liquid metal. Yorozu’s True Sphere was unlike any other skill in Jujutsu Kaisen, generating unlimited pressure and even threatening Sukuna.

However, as mentioned, Gege did not expand upon it. Yorozu’s Domain Expansion, Threefold Affliction, also remained a mystery since Sukuna could counter it using his Ten Shadows technique. Her uniquely chaotic presence in the series, where she cared more about her love for Sukuna than any grand philosophy, was a breath of fresh air.
Unfortunately, Yorozu’s character arc was rushed, and her role in the narrative was more instrumental than integral. She highlighted Sukuna’s growth in power, but was never treated as a character in her own right.
Therefore, Gege missed out on the opportunity to seamlessly integrate Sukuna’s past with Megumi’s trauma, while also introducing an exciting character with unpredictable motivations and creative powers.
